Message from Mr. Greata
It is always such a joy when we open our doors and welcome in our pyramid community, as we did this week with our annual Pyramid Art Show. This event is a vibrant celebration of the incredible talent of students of all ages, and we are so grateful for the tremendous turnout and support for our young artists.
Later in the week, we held our Senior Art Show, which showcased the remarkable artistic growth and achievement of our graduating students. Some artists included pieces from their early years in our pyramid, and seeing the progression of their work was a powerful testament to their dedication and development. Beyond their impressive technical skill, many of the pieces struck an emotional chord, revealing our students’ ability to challenge perspectives and tap into the human spirit through art. Thank you to Andy Saffron, Deirdre Forgione, and Leslie OShaughnessy for your hard work and creativity in organizing both of these inspiring events.
Another important artistic milestone occurred this week with our Guitar Concert, marking the final performance conducted by Lonnie Bickel, a true icon at Carter G. Woodson High School. It was a bittersweet evening—filled with the sweet sounds of student musicians and the deep appreciation for the legacy he leaves behind. He has created a space where students not only honed their musical talents but, for many, picked up an instrument for the very first time. Thank you, Mr. Bickel, for your passion, mentorship, and lasting contributions to our school.
Our students also continue to shine in athletics, STEM, and beyond. Here are just a few recent highlights:
-
Robotics: Our Robotics Team won their District Championship and will be traveling to Houston over spring break to compete in the World Championships. Good luck, team!
-
Winter Guard: Our Woodson Winter Guard earned Gold in their class at the Atlantic Indoor Association Winter Guard Championships last Saturday!
-
All-State Swimming & Diving: Several of our students were named to the Class 6 First Team All-State. Congratulations to Nathaniel Grannis (Dive), Alex Ericksen, Brady Bauernshub, Tyler Plath, Bobby Reddish (200 Medley Relay), Lyla Devlin (100 Breastroke), Olivia Strosin, Maggie Johnston, Riley Peters, Lyla Devlin (400 Freestyle Relay)!
-
Science Olympiad: The Woodson Science Olympiad team placed 2nd at the Virginia State Science Olympiad Tournament held at UVA. The team is waiting to hear if they get a bid to go to the National Tournament this May.
As a reminder, next week is Spring Break. The school building and its offices will be closed. If you need to reach an administrator, please email us directly.
If you are on campus over the break, please be aware of roof construction near Door 5, as we begin replacing the roof on our auxiliary gym.
While school is on break, many of our athletic teams are still competing! Please continue to check out our activities calendar and come cheer on our Woodson athletes. For example, Track & Field competes tonight at South Lakes .
Please note: there will be no Woodson Weekly or Weekly Wrap-Up next week.
Wishing everyone a safe, restful, and enjoyable Spring Break!

National Assistant Principals Week
This week was National Assistant Principals Week, a time to recognize the vital role assistant principals play in supporting student success, empowering teachers, and shaping positive school climates.
At Woodson, our assistant principals go above and beyond each day to ensure our school is a place where students thrive and staff feel valued. Their tireless commitment, leadership, and compassion are foundational to our mission, and we were proud to honor them this week.
A huge shout out to Michelle Case, Bomin Collins, Melinda Conner, Paula DiSalvo, Kathy Martin, and Kelly O'Connell. We also want to give a shoutout to our Directors, Blair Smith and Josh Peters. We couldn't do what we do without all of you!
This year, Assistant Principal Kathy Martin is in the running for the 2024-2025 FCPS Outstanding School-Based Leader award! We can't wait to see the results at the ceremony in June. Let's go Mrs. Martin!
Counselor Corner
Parents! We still urgently need AP Exam proctor volunteers to administer exams. We will train you! Please email Jamie Korpacz at jlkorpacz@fcps.edu to sign up. Thank you!
FCPS and NOVA are partnering to offer Spring Break sessions to anyone that wants to attend. The sessions will include tours and more information about NOVA’s processes.
Counselors have completed visiting all 10th grade health classrooms to deliver wellness lessons and review self-advocacy skills so students can keep their wellness as a top priority.
We hosted our 3rd annual Junior Focus Day last week! It was so exciting to see the sessions buzzing with student learning and engagement about post-secondary planning. Whether your pathway leads to the military, workforce, college, or a technical school, students received valuable information. Students and parents can find session and presenter information on the Junior Focus Day padlet.
April is the Month of the Military Child and we are excited to celebrate our military children and families this month. This week, we had Purple-Up Day on Wednesday and hosted a military appreciation breakfast on Friday for our military-connected students and their families. We are grateful to our military families for their service and sacrifice…thank you!
We hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable Spring Break!
Woodson held its annual Month of the Military Child breakfast today. Thank you to everyone who attended!
