On Friday, March 21st, Edu-Futuro hosted its 27th Anniversary Gala and proudly honored our very own Solangie McPherson, Family Liaison at Coates ES, with the Community Special Recognition Award. Solangie was celebrated for her unwavering dedication to empowering families through the creation and expansion of the Parent Academy at Coates, in collaboration with Edu-Futuro and FCPS resources.
Thanks to her leadership, countless parents have gained vital skills and knowledge to support their children’s education, strengthen family bonds, and engage in meaningful community programs like Edu-Futuro’s Parent Empowerment and Workforce Development initiatives. Solangie’s commitment to inclusivity has transcended language and cultural barriers, making the Parent Academy a welcoming and impactful space for families from all backgrounds.
We are so proud of Solangie and grateful for the lasting change she continues to inspire in our school and community!
This past Friday, April 4th, we proudly hosted our annual Coates Multicultural Night, and what an incredible evening it was! With over 25 countries represented, our school community came together to celebrate the rich diversity that makes Coates such a special place.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Solangie McPherson and our amazing PTA for their continued support in making this cherished event happen year after year. Your dedication ensures we have this opportunity to honor and celebrate our cultural strengths as one united community.
We’re also deeply grateful to all the families and performers who shared their traditions, talents, and energy, making the night both entertaining and meaningful. A special shoutout to Ms. Kim, Korean teacher at Westfield HS, and her students for their beautiful fan dance and drum performance, giving our students a glimpse into the vibrant opportunities that await them in high school.
Thank you, Coates community, for coming together and making this night unforgettable!
Join us in celebrating National Assistant Principals Week, April 7-11! We're incredibly grateful for the hard work and dedication of our assistant principals, Ms. Wu, Ms. Hinkson, & Mrs. Gray, who are essential to the success of our students and staff. Let's take a moment to appreciate their leadership and commitment to creating a positive and supportive learning environment.
Thank you, ladies, for all you do!
FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.
April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience. Learn more about Month of the Military Child and FCPS resources for military families.
To show our support for all our military-connected families, we are inviting our school community to “Purple Up!” on Wednesday, April 9, for military children. Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.
April is School Library Month and it's a great time to celebrate the essential role that school librarians play in the lives of students. School librarians ensure students have access to a wide variety of high-quality books and resources that connect them to the world and build a culture of literacy. Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills. They support learning across all subject areas by teaching students the skills to be independent problem-solvers and creative thinkers. By creating a safe environment for all students to be engaged and curious learners, FCPS libraries are places where everyone belongs.Take a moment to learn more about FCPS Library Programs and share your appreciation for our school librarian, Ms. Meehan!
