Message from Mr. Greata

April is an exciting time at Carter G. Woodson High School, as we’re showered with activities, recognitions, and celebrations.

First up—Senior Prom is tonight at Westwood Country Club! We can’t wait to see our amazing seniors dressed up and dancing the night away. It’s sure to be a night to remember.

We also have more exciting news—our Boys Basketball team continues to earn major accolades for their incredible season. Congratulations to Noah Limbago and Kaylen Chilton, who were named to the First Team All-State Basketball Team, and to our Head Coach, Doug Craig, who was named the Class 6 Virginia State Basketball Coach of the Year! Huge congratulations to the entire program on a phenomenal season.

April is also Month of the Military Child, and here at Woodson, we are proud to have over 250 students from military-connected families. Thank you to all our military families for the sacrifices you make as your loved ones serve our country. Today, we celebrated our military-connected students and student leaders during our monthly Student Leader Lunch. And don’t forget—Wednesday, April 9th is Purple Up! Day—be sure to wear purple in support!

We also took a moment today to recognize our amazing librarians, Lisa Muir and Erinn Harris, for National School Librarian Day. Our librarians are record-setters when it comes to student access to research databases, and they collaborate closely with teachers to equip students with strong research and citation skills. In so many ways, they are the unsung heroes of our academic program—helping prepare our students for college and beyond. Thank you both for all you do!

Shout-out to our Student Services department for organizing a fantastic Junior Focus Day this week! Students had 11 different sessions to choose from—including apprenticeships, the college admissions process, career exploration, resume writing, and more. These sessions are a vital part of our mission to prepare students for life after high school.

Looking to get involved? AP Testing is coming up in May, and we need parent volunteers to help make it all happen. Our students are incredibly motivated and successful, and the volume of AP tests we administer is a big lift. If you’re able to spare a little time, check out the link in this week’s newsletter and sign up to support our testing efforts. Thank you in advance!

Next week is Assistant Principals Week, and we are so fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented group of APs. Every student is impacted—directly or indirectly—by their work. If you’ve been personally supported by one of our assistant principals, please take a moment next week to thank them.

Don’t forget—Softball Youth Night is this Monday, April 7th at 6:30 PM vs. Fairfax. Kids in grades K–6 get in free with a paying adult. And one more reminder—Senior Prom is tonight at 7 PM at Westwood Country Club!

If April showers bring May flowers, then with everything we’re being showered with this month, I can’t wait to see what blossoms in May.

Have a great weekend, Woodson family!

Purple Up! Day - April 9th

To show our support for all our military-connected families, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on Wednesday, April 9, for military children.

Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.

Pyramid Art Show

Our Annual Woodson Pyramid Art Show and Senior/AP Art Show festivities will be taking place next week!

We invite you to join us in Cav Hall on Tuesday, April 8th from 6-8pm, for the Pyramid Art Show, which will feature lots of fabulous K-11 artwork!

The hand-painted Furniture Silent Auction will also be happening at the reception, along with mini art canvas sales and light refreshments.

Excellence Is at a Crossroads

Fairfax County residents believe in the value of a strong public school system. Residents live here because of the excellence of Fairfax County Public Schools, even our community members with grown children. Excellence in FCPS comes from its people — dedicated teachers and support staff who make sure that our students are ready to learn. Today, that excellence is at a crossroads.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will finalize the budget on Tuesday, May 6, and the current advertised budget underfunds FCPS by $150 million

Now is the time. Do we want continued excellence, or are we ready to consider cuts to important programs that we have come to expect from FCPS?
