2. A Note from the Principal

Dear Rocky Run Community-

The past week made me really appreciate the Washington DC metropolitan area. From March 24-April 1, Rocky Run hosted 30 students and staff members from the Warriner School in Banbury, England. Students participated in school sponsored field trips to The Spy Museum and Capitol, among other things. The timing was perfect, as the cherry blossoms were in full bloom! I had the privilege of hosting a Warriner staff member and loved taking him to the Nats Opening weekend, TopGolf, Great Falls, and Baltimore's Inner Harbor. I often forget how much there is to do in the area.

During the visit from the Warriner School, we officially transitioned to the fourth quarter of the year. On Friday, March 28, students participated in Career Day activities. This event used to be a staple on the RRMS calendar, and we were happy to bring it back. Middle school is the perfect time for 12-14 year-olds to learn more about the types of careers that align with their interests. A special thanks to Anna Slevin and Halissa Jacobson for spearheading the organization of the event.

Next week is the last week of school before spring break, and it will be busy! We will host our annual author visit on Wednesday, April 9. Jennifer Nielson returns to RRMS after a few year absence to engage with our students on the writing process. On Thursday, April 10, all 8th grade students will attend programs at their future high schools to learn about activities available to them as they transition. Finally, on Thursday, April 10 Rocky Run will play Franklin Middle School in the annual basketball games. I hope that as many students as possible remained "Rams in Good Standing" and will be able to attend the games.

As always, thank you for your continued partnership and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions. I look forward to seeing you at RRMS soon.

Sincerely,

Peter Kownacki

5. Student Services Updates

Rising 9th Grade Activity Fairs

On Thursday, April 10th, all 8th grade students will attend an activity fair at their assigned high school: Centreville HS, Chantilly HS, or Westfield HS.

8th grade students who are attending high schools other than the 3 listed above will attend at Chantilly HS. Students will be dismissed from class around 9 AM and will return back to Rocky Run between 11:30 AM - 12 PM.

Permission slips were distributed during Rock Time on March 18 and must be returned to your student’s science teacher as soon as possible.  Students cannot attend the trip if they do not return the signed permission slip.

Students can expect to receive important information about extracurricular activities and learn more about their upcoming transition to high school.

6. Instructional Updates

Upcoming Author Visit

We are so looking forward to hosting New York Times Bestselling Author, Jennifer Nielsen on April 9! On that day, students will attend a presentation with her by team during a class period. To get ready for her visit, please encourage your student to:

  • Submit questions for her to answer during the presentation (on the Student Schoology Course in April)
  • Sign up for a special lunch with the author session (on the Student Schoology Course in April)
  • Read one of her books ahead of time! Most classroom libraries have copies of Jennifer Nielsen’s books and the library does, too. You can also get them at the public library as well!
  • Learn more about her on her website, jennielsen.com.

If you have questions about the upcoming author visit or would like more information, please contact librarian Rachel Grover (ragrover@fcps.edu).

Library Updates

April is School Library Month! This is a great time to celebrate the valuable role libraries and librarians serve in school communities. Did you know? Today, April 4, is National School Librarian Day! In addition to supporting instruction in all content areas, Mrs. Grover maintains an updated collection of books on many reading levels and topics, both for personal and academic interest. She also makes sure the library is available for students to read, study, and have fun before school, during Rock Time and lunches, as well as hosting clubs after school. Mrs. Grover offers students and classes opportunities to use our makerspace, called The Inspiration Studio, and collaborates with multiple staff members to host an annual author visit to benefit the entire school community. School librarians are essential leaders in school communities and support students and staff, empowering them with the resources and knowledge needed for lifelong learning.

We are celebrating all month long with activities in the library, on Schoology, during Rock Time, and after school. See below for after school opportunities your student might enjoy!

7. After-School Program Information

  • After-School Schedule: Week of 4/7
    • Upcoming high school opportunities.  7th and 8th graders are welcome - regardless of which high school they are attending.  Students must be logged into their fcpsschools account to access these forms.
  • Mark your calendars: there will be no after-school programs on these  upcoming dates -  4/11, 5/23
  • Late buses will depart Monday - Thursday between 4:45 - 5:00 PM.  Routes differ from regular AM/PM buses as there are fewer late buses and fewer stops.  Routes are posted on the After-School Schoology Course.  Please make sure your student knows their late bus number prior to staying after.
  • Check out our Program Preview for information on program times, pick-up, etc.

Science Olympiad State Tournament

This past weekend, Rocky Run competed at the Virginia Science Olympiad State Tournament, showcasing their dedication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills against the top schools in the state. Rocky Run secured an impressive 13th out of 26 competing teams, with several event medals being awarded.  Congratulations to our team and a big thank you to our club sponsors, Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Little!

VIP Summer Program

At this time, we are not currently accepting registrations for the VIP Summer Camps as this program may not be available or may be restructured. The current Fairfax County budget proposal includes eliminating funding for the Middle School After-School Program Specialists who design and run the VIP summer camps.
