A Note from Mrs. Goddin...

Hello MUES Families,

It has been a short, yet busy week at MUES! We began the week by having off of school on Monday in celebration of Eid, which many of our Mustang families celebrate. We certainly hope it was a wonderful day of celebration for our families!

On Tuesday, as students enjoyed their day off from school, we had a great day of engaging professional development for our staff as we prepared for the 4th (and final) quarter of the school year. As a friendly reminder, 3rd grade progress report card grades will be live in ParentVUE next week.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Ms. Scott and Mr. Schatz, General Music teachers, for supporting our 6th grade Mustangs who participated in last weekend's All County Chorus performance. Additionally, I'd also like to thank Ms. Coe, Art teacher, for selecting such incredible pieces of artwork created by some of our Mustangs to showcase at yesterday evening's Westfield Pyramid Art Show.

Ms. Scott, Mr. Schatz, and Ms. Coe did an excellent job highlighting the great talent of our Mustangs at these two division-wide community events! We are fortunate to have them supporting our Mustangs!

Did you know that the month of April is School Library Month and it's a great time to celebrate the essential role that school librarians play in the lives of students. School librarians ensure students have access to a wide variety of high-quality books and resources that connect them to the world and build a culture of literacy. Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills. They support learning across all subject areas by teaching students the skills to be independent problem-solvers and creative thinkers. By creating a safe environment for all students to be engaged and curious learners, FCPS libraries are places where everyone belongs. Take a moment to learn more about FCPS Library Programs and share your appreciation of your school librarian!

Please join me in thanking Ms. Soni for being the best school librarian a school community can ask for!

The start of spring break is now just one week away! Enjoy your weekend, Mustang Family!

Sincerely,

Melissa Goddin

Proud Principal

Autism Acceptance Month

aut

April is Autism Acceptance Month. One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. Our schools and staff play a vital role in creating and ensuring inclusive environments that accommodate and affirm autistic students.

Month of the Military Child

mil

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience. National Arab American Heritage Month

ah

FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

How can you and your child create solutions that are new and unique? During National Poetry Month, work with your child to find new ways to create poetry with words found in the world around you. You can use newspapers, magazines, books, even grocery lists to create a new poem. In April’s AART Newsletter we use book spines to create one funny and one thoughtful poem using the titles of books written on their spines. Share with us poetry you generate together!

We invite you to submit a story below to acknowledge the great work of an FCPS employee or group of employees who should receive FCPS CARES recognition.

Please take note of the following before submitting an FCPS CARES:

  • A notification email, with the submission text included, will be sent to the recipient(s) and copied to the recipient's supervisor(s).
  • All submissions will be posted to our FCPS CARES webpage and shared via other FCPS news outlets.

🙋Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is April 14th-April 18th. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Monday, April 21st when our school doors open at 8:35 AM.

Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong! Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources.

VDH Immunization Packets for Rising 7th Graders

As required by the Code of Virginia, parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend public school. All students entering seventh grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older.
  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older.
  • A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
  • After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents/guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with their child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. If your child does not have a health care provider, please visit the FCPS Immunizations Resource page to find out where to get an immunization.

Please review the Virginia Department of Health Information Packet for more information on rising 7th grade immunization requirements.
