Community building was a huge experience in kindergarten this week Mrs. Bekenstein’s class had a family come in to share their traditions about Eid as a guest reader. One student also shared google slides about Ramadan. Today’s activity helped to bring cultural awareness to our youngest learners as it introduced them to diverse traditions and celebrations and helped them understand that people have different ways of celebrating important events.

Thank you to our wonderful parents for sharing.

Happy Friday Fox Mill Families,

Another busy and productive week has ended at “The Mill”! We've seen incredible learning, exciting events, and the continued growth of our wonderful school community. Here's a quick recap of what happened this week and a peek at what's coming up:

Music In Our Schools Month

Did you know that March is Music In Our Schools Month? To celebrate and raise awareness for music education, Ms. O’Neil and Mrs. Spierto hosted Parent Demonstrations or “In-formances” during music classes for grades K-3 this week. Students were excited to show their parents a variety of activities including singing, playing recorders, playing xylophones, reading music on the staff, writing music with manipulatives, playing singing games, folk dancing, and more! Thank you to all of the parents who came to watch!

Young Scholars Field Trip

National Building Museum Fieldtrip

This week, 41 of our 45 Young Scholars went to the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. to participate in the museum’s City by Design program. This experience offered both teachers and students an engaging environment. Students became city planners for the day as they designed their own model city. They considered the problems a city can have and offered solutions by planning their own community. They used their imaginations to design and construct model buildings for the city using colorful supplies and recycled materials.

Students also visited two of the museum's current exhibitions: Brick City and Building Stories. In Brick City, students saw iconic architecture from cities around the world made from LEGO® bricks. Students then demonstrated their creativity in an interactive area where they could build their own masterpieces out of LEGO® bricks. In Building Stories, students interacted with familiar classics and new favorites through hands-on activities, media installations, sketching, reading, and building stories of their own. Building Stories "is the first national exhibition to call attention to the built environment’s role as an important, and often overlooked, character in children’s literature." Both exhibitions gave students a better understanding of the complexity of issues associated with designing and building a modern community and how they can contribute to improving the quality of life in any community, including their own.

Look for pictures of our trip on the school's website. You may also view more information about all of the museum's current exhibitions athttps://nbm.org/current-exhibitions/

Month of the Military Child

FCPS will celebrate Month of the Military Child in April.  We will honor our military families with a week of spirit wear from April 7th-11th. Wednesday the 9th will be “Purple Up” Day. Purple represents all the colors of the military branches mixed together. More detailed information went home in the Thursday folders.

We would also like to invite all Fox Mill families with a military connection to “Craft and Cookies” on Tuesday, April 8th  from 2:00-3:00pm. Join us in our new garden by the playground for some yummy cookies and a dandelion craft.  The dandelion represents military children because they will bloom where they are planted. We will use fingerprints to decorate a dandelion print. A print invitation will be going home next week.

Thank you for your service. We appreciate all that you do.
