Hello Bull Run families,
It was a short but busy week!
There are several things happening tomorrow, Friday 04/04:
* In the afternoon we will be having a Heritage Parade. Students are encouraged to wear colors or cultural clothing that represents their heritage! It is not mandatory to participate. If you are able to email me at JaMarotta@fcps.edu to let me know if you'd like your student to march in the parade, please do; but regardless-if a student shows up ready to march they will be able to! Celebrating the diversity of cultures within our school not only fosters unity but also gives everyone a chance to learn from one another.
* At 5:30pm our Heritage Night will begin! It should be a wonderful event for our families displaying their heritage with pride! There will be food samples, dances, songs, crafts and posters made by our families and staff members on display! There is still time to sign up to host a table tomorrow night (see link below)
HERITAGE NIGHT SIGN UP
* Tomorrow on the morning news show I will be announcing a new attendance initiative for the remainder of the school year. I am calling it the “The 20 Day Challenge”. Whichever homeroom in each grade level has the best overall percentage of attendance for 20 consecutive school days (beginning Monday, 04/07) will earn extra recess AND an ice pop party! This will hopefully incentivize the individual students, but also my hope is that the kids will hold each other accountable, and come together to earn the goal. We will be able to do this TWICE before the end of the school year. Part of our School Innovation and Improvement Plan is to get our chronic absenteeism rate below 10% for the year. WE WILL DO IT!
*Good luck to our 5th graders taking their IRW (Integrated Reading and Writing) assessment tomorrow!
* Tomorrow, Friday 04/04, is the first Friday of the month. That means students and staff are encouraged to wear jerseys of team colors of their favorite sports team!
Have a wonderful weekend!

FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. April is Autism Acceptance Month. One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. Our schools and staff play a vital role in creating and ensuring inclusive environments that accommodate and affirm autistic students. |

Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…
There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:
- Determine eligibility.
- Identify your local school.
- Gather documents.
- Fill out forms.
- Schedule an appointment.
After the appointment at the school (the student and one guardian must be present), the student will be ready for orientation (more information to come at a later date). Read more about the registration process. For additional information, please contact Maria Betancourth, our school registrar.
Try Online Registration
Learn how to begin the online registration process.
When registering, parents/caregivers will need to create or log in to an existing SIS ParentVUE account.

Excellence Is at a Crossroads
Fairfax County residents believe in the value of a strong public school system. Residents live here because of the excellence of Fairfax County Public Schools, even our community members with grown children. Excellence in FCPS comes from its people — dedicated teachers and support staff who make sure that our students are ready to learn. Today, that excellence is at a crossroads.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will finalize the budget on Tuesday, May 6, and the current advertised budget underfunds FCPS by $150 million.
Now is the time. Do we want continued excellence, or are we ready to consider cuts to important programs that we have come to expect from FCPS?
Do you believe in the power and promise of public education? Go to fcps.edu/crossroads.
Share Your Thoughts on School Start Times
FCPS would like to hear from all families on the possibility of adjusting school start times across the division. Please check your email for a survey link from Fairfax County Public Schools. It was also sent to staff as well as to students in grades 5-12. The confidential survey will be open through Saturday, April 12.
