“Purple Up!” on Wednesday, April 9th

purple up2

April is the Month of the Military Child, a time to recognize children from military families for their contributions and sacrifices. We recognize that children serve too! Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is proud to have over 13,500 military-connected youth in our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community and recognize their strength and resilience.

To show our support for military-connected youth, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 9. Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue. We extend our appreciation for the service of all children from military families and celebrate them by wearing purple to say, “Thank You!” Whether or not you know any military-connected youth, please take a moment to recognize and honor them by wearing purple on Wednesday April 9.

Ravensworth Community Preschool Peer Program

preschol comunity peers

Ravensworth Elementary is pleased to announce that we have openings for community peers in our preschool program.  This year we had several preschoolers who lived in our neighborhood participate in integration activities with same age peers. This program involves teaching preschoolers with delays and without delays in the same classroom. It can provide young children with a more stimulating environment, teach skills for coping with different situations, and provide the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills.

Our program has a limited number of community preschoolers (1-2 per class), who are age 3 ½ -4 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities. The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. Our students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.

If you are interested in enrolling your preschooler or know of someone who might be, please contact Sarah Minor, Preschool Teacher at seminor@fcps.edu or MC Visger, Preschool Teacher at mrvisger@fcps.edu.

Chess Club

chess club 2

For everyone in grades 2 - 6 interested in learning and playing chess

  • All levels welcome!
  • Chess Club meets every Friday after school in the cafeteria (Chess club will not be held on any days the school is closed or there is early release).
  • $130/semester (includes one club T-shirt per year and snacks)

Players are grouped by ability, not age.  We teach the rules to beginners and strategy to experienced players.

Chess teaches responsibility, discipline, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Chess players learn how to make the most of their opportunities and how to turn a bad situation to their advantage.  They learn not to make excuses for their setbacks, and to win and lose graciously.

Chess Club is offered through our partnership with the U.S. Chess Center (https://chessctr.org). All instructors are certified chess coaches.

For more information, contact Ravensworth PTA  at president@ravensworthpta.org or the U.S. Chess Center at admin@chessctr.org
