Quarter End, Eid al-Fitr, and Student Holiday
Friday, March 28, is the last day of the third quarter. It is a full day of school for students.
All FCPS schools and offices are closed on Monday, March 31, for Eid al-Fitr. Tuesday, April 1, is a student holiday and teacher workday. See the complete school year calendar.

Cub Run Volleyball Game versus Virginia Run
Come cheer on our sixth grade students and staff during our annual volleyball game as we take on Virginia Run! The game is on Friday, April 4 from 7:00pm-9:00pm at Westfield High School in their gym.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. No child should be dropped off and left unsupervised.
Let’s put on our spirit wear and cheer on our Cubbies!

Principals’ Walking Club
Our next Principals’ Walking Club is on Friday, April 11 from 8:05-8:25 AM in the gym or on the field! Cubbies are invited to come and join Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Haider, and other Cub Run staff to kick off the day with some movement! Our Cubbies will add to their club charms for attending. We hope to see you on April 11!

 Our Green Team is working on a special project, and they need your help! As a part of the Westfield Pyramid Challenge, Cub Run is collecting as many plastic bottles as we can, in hopes to build a greenhouse for our school grounds. Green Team members have been hard at work making posters for the school, as well as recording clips for the morning news show to remind students to bring in plastic bottles- but we could use the community's help, too! If you have any plastic water bottles, Gatorade bottles, etc., please send it in with your student(s) to be put into the Green Team's collection stations around the school. Hopefully in the near future, we will have a green house to help our Green Team keep up their awesome gardening work!

Positivity Project
This week, our school community is focused on the character strength of Love of Learning. Love of learning means enjoying the process of learning new things, whether in school or on your own.
People with a love of learning are motivated because they find joy in learning itself, not just for rewards like grades or prizes. They are driven by the excitement of discovering and mastering new skills.
Developing a love of learning is important for students because it helps them stay motivated and engaged. It can also improve their mental and physical well-being as they take pride in overcoming challenges and growing.
To practice and encourage the character strength of Love of Learning at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Help & Resources for Infants, Toddlers, & Their Families
Are you concerned about your infant, toddler, or preschool-aged child's development? Resources are available if your child exhibits difficulties in one or more of the following areas:
- communication
- fine and/or gross motor skills
- self-help skills
- problem solving
- attention skills
Learn more about typical developmental milestones.
The Infant & Toddler Connection of Virginia (ITC) is the state’s early intervention system for infants and toddlers (0-36 months) with disabilities and their families. ITC provides evaluations and services for children who have developmental delays or medical conditions that may affect development. Parents are encouraged to contact ITC at 703-246-7121 to share their concerns.
Early Childhood Child Find is the process of identifying children with potential special education needs between the ages of 20 months and 5 years (children must be two by September 30).
FCPS Early Childhood Identification and Services (ECID&S) offers a free referral process to identify potential developmental delays or disabilities. Special education services are provided for all children who are found eligible through the referral process. Parents are encouraged to contact 571-423-4121 with questions or to make a referral.
Helping students meet the criteria for kindergarten readiness is Goal 1 of the Strategic Plan.
Save the Date: Community Conversations with Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid
Your voice matters, and Superintendent Reid wants to hear from you! Share your thoughts and ask questions regarding FCPS on Monday, April 7, Greenbriar West Elementary School from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Click on a date to register. Registration is not required but is encouraged for planning purposes.
Childcare and interpretation services will be provided. Events are open to all. Find out about other opportunities to connect with Dr. Reid.
Next Steps in the Budget Process
The next steps in the FCPS FY 2026 Budget process include the School Board presenting the budget to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, April 22. The Board of Supervisors will then conduct public hearings Tuesday, April 22, through Thursday, April 24. Community members can submit testimony or sign up to speak.
Visit the county government website to view the Fairfax County FY 2026 Advertised Budget. The community is also invited to complete an online survey to provide feedback on the county’s FY 2026 Advertised Budget.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!
This year, spring break is April 14-18. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Monday, April 21. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Chronic Absenteeism
For school year 2024-2025, school accreditation ratings in Virginia are based on student performance across nine school quality indicators within the state’s new Student Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). One of these indicators is chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason and whether the absence was excused or unexcused. A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10%.
As of March 26, Cub Run's chronic absenteeism rate is up to 13.9%. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can move into an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.
April - Month of the Military Child
April is the Month of the Military Child, a time to honor and celebrate the resilience, courage, and contributions of FCPS military-connected children.
To show our support, FCPS will celebrate Purple Up! Day on Wednesday, April 9, 2025. Please note that this date has been adjusted to align with our spring break schedule. On this day, school staff and students are encouraged to wear purple, symbolizing unity and support for military families across all service branches.
Kindergarten Parent Information Session - May 8
Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Haider will be hosting a parent information session for rising kindergarten parents/guardians. The session will be taking place in our cafeteria at 5:00pm. Our Kinder Camp for students will continue to be scheduled for August.
Kindergarten Registration
FCPS registration is now available for rising kindergarten students. Your student must have turned 5 years old by 09/30/2025 to be eligible to be registered.
There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:
- Determine eligibility.
- Identify your local school.
- Gather documents.
- Fill out forms.
- Schedule an appointment.

Online registration for the 2025-26 school year is open for parents/caregivers.
When registering, parents/caregivers will create (or log into an existing) SIS ParentVUE account. Follow the instructions on the page and complete the registration process.
Once you have submitted the registration packet online, our Student Information Assistant (SIA) Mrs. Namrata Saxena will contact you via email to set up an appointment to meet her in person. You can also reach her at 703-633-7500.
If you need a paper copy of the registration packet, it can be picked up at the front office.
