Edison Academy Monthly Newsletter

Edison Academy Families,

Friday, March 28, is the last day of the third quarter. It is a full day of school for students.

All FCPS schools and offices are closed on Monday, March 31, for Eid al-Fitr. Tuesday, April 1, is a student holiday and teacher workday. See the complete school year calendar.

Eid al-Fitr, also known as small Eid, marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, and is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims congregate that morning for Eid prayers. It is a time of official receptions and private visits, when friends greet one another, presents are given, new clothes are worn, and the graves of relatives are visited. The most common way to wish someone a Happy Eid al-Fitr is Eid Mubarak, which means “blessed feast” (or festival).

🌷 April 14-18 is spring break. Schools and school offices will be closed. We wish our students and teachers a happy and restful Spring Break! See the complete school year calendar.

Good luck to our student competitors attending the state competition for SkillsUSA April 4-6, 2025. We are excited to see what you accomplish and proud of your hard work to get to this point.

Please join us for the Electrical Construction and Engineering Night on April 10, 2025. You can RSVP here. You can also watch the Fox5 DC feature here.

We will continue to share important information and good news through these newsletters, our Edison Academy website, and social media platforms, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Sincerely,

Monica Bentley, Academy Administrator

Good News and Events

Electrical Construction and Engineering

Each year, Mr. Wolfe and a selection committee promote four Level 2 students to be the Crew Leaders for the upcoming school year. To start the year, students are broken down into four independent groups (or crews) and those crews will work together throughout the year to complete the curriculum and requirements. The four crew leaders, mentor and manage the crews to simulate a work site and gain experience. The work is reviewed throughout the school year and students who meet the criteria are considered for Level 3 crew leaders.

Thank you to the outgoing crew for their dedication and contributions throughout the school year!

Criminal Justice Courthouse Field Trip

Criminal Justice students got a firsthand look at the legal system in action. They observed live civil, criminal and traffic court proceedings for cases in the areas of divorce, violent crimes, driving under the influence, reckless driving, and faulty equipment. They were fortunate to observe and engage with the judges, lawyers, clerk, and a deputy. This experience provided insight into courtroom procedures, the justice system, and civic responsibility.

Thank you to the Airmen for taking time to talk to the HVACR and Electrical Construction students about careers in the Air Force. They talked about the many opportunities from working in aircraft mechanics to playing sports and even performing in the Air Force band!

Auto Collision Produces the Star of the Show

Congratulations to the Auto Collision program for creating the prop car for the musical Grease being performed at Edison High School. This restored front end of a 1949 Ford is getting a lot of attention. Local media outlets have covered this story and there is a feature story on FCPS, click here to read more about the collaboration with Edison Theater Company.

Lanyards

All students that are not Edison High School students who attend Edison Academy have received an Edison Academy lanyard. It is expected that all feeder Academy students display their lanyards around their neck when entering the building, in the hallways, and when they are exiting the building. This was shared with all students at our beginning of the year orientation.  This presentation has also been posted in Schoology by our teachers. Moving forward, if your student needs a replacement lanyard there will be a $5.00 fee.

FCPS Cares - Recognize Edison Employees!

FCPS Cares

The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for families, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees at Edison HS School. We love our staff members; let's tell them how we feel!

Looking Ahead to April

Autism Acceptance Month graphic

April is Autism Acceptance Month. One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. Our schools and staff play a vital role in creating and ensuring inclusive environments that accommodate and affirm autistic students.

Month of the Military Child graphic

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience.

Arab American Heritage Month graphic

FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

School Library Month

In FCPS libraries, students develop knowledge and skills, experience a sense of belonging, find inspiration and support, and have the ability to freely pursue their personal interests and academic growth.
