Our current kindergarten students will be with Specials teachers and White Oaks staff for an extra recess and activity during the orientation time.   Please contact Kyle Jimenez KVJimenez@fcps.edu with questions.

April is the Month of the Military Child

Each year our nation designates April as the Month of the Military Child to recognize and thank children from military families for the sacrifices they make living the military lifestyle. The recognition is part of the legacy of former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger who established the commemoration in 1986. During the month, one day is selected as the day to "Purple Up! For Military Kids" and all school personnel and students are encouraged to wear purple in recognition of the strength and sacrifices of military-connected youth (MCY).

Military-connected youth face unique circumstances living the military lifestyle. By understanding the lifestyle of military-connected youth we can better meet their needs as they transition with their family members who serve our nation.

Currently, over 14,000 military-connected youth call FCPS home.

Celebrating the Month of the Military Child provides a powerful opportunity to raise awareness and build support to help these children meet the unique challenges they face! It is an opportunity to recognize and thank military children and youth for their heroism, character, courage, sacrifices, and continued resilience.

AAAP Spring Screening: Referrals accepted March 21 – April 21, 2025

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

While screening for Subject Specific and Part-Time AAP Services can occur any time in the school year, we review data on all students in the Spring to determine services for the start of the next school year. Please note that the deadline for Full Time AAP referrals has passed (December 15, 2024) and we are not able to accept any Full Time referrals at this time.

Parents are welcome to submit a School Based Referral Form (linked here) to Susan Lattuca (salattuca@fcps.edu) and Dana Harlan (daharlan@fcps.edu), our AARTs, during the Spring Screening window between March 21st and April 21st.  Parents or guardians who submit a referral form will be notified by the local elementary school of their student’s eligibility status in early June.

Screening Process for Subject Specific and Part-Time Services

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

For more information about the continuum of AAP services, please visit the AAP website at: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advancedacademics-identification-and-placement/current-fcps-students

If you have questions, please reach out to Susan Lattuca (salattuca@fcps.edu) and Dana Harlan (daharlan@fcps.edu).
