Roadrunner Rundown

March 24, 2025

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We will begin the class placement process for next year soon, and we would like to explain how we handle this at Marshall Road ES. All of our teachers, academic and Specials teachers, spend much time reflecting on the school year and discussing your children with whom they have developed such close relationships; this process is both careful and thorough.

In making placements for the 25-26 homerooms, we seek to build positive communities. This is more complex than just assigning students to a particular teacher, which would limit our ability to build effective classroom dynamics.  We strive for an even mix of girls and boys, and we take into account the many new students who will join us next school year. While we do believe that it is important for children to have friends in their class, we also want them to be open to forming new friendships while at school.

Teachers spend many hours each day with their students and know who works well with whom. However, we invite parents to offer their perspective on friendships and on any unique needs your child has that we might not be aware of. Please do not make requests for a specific teacher. We have the utmost confidence in all our teachers and have seen over the years that children and parents are able to form strong academic and personal relationships with many different teachers and styles. It might also be helpful for you to know that students often rotate out of their homerooms for different subjects and small groups. We will also be hiring new teachers who will be wonderful additions to our faculty.

Your input is optional but if you have information to share about your child that will assist us, please complete this form no later than Friday, April 25Please know that this is a hard deadline. Any requests received after this date will not be considered. When completing the form, please be sure to list each child in your family separately and identify the grade your child will be in next year. Teachers will not schedule conferences specifically to discuss placement. Finally, let me remind you that we will take into account the information that you send us, but those final decisions rest only with our school team; we cannot guarantee any one outcome for any/all families. Thank you for being mindful of the process and deadlines.

Have a great week!

School Events and Information

Attendance Matters

Parents and families are essential partners in promoting good attendance as they are first in line for making sure their children get to school daily. Just as families should focus on how their children are performing academically, we need a focus on good attendance so that missed days don’t add up to academic trouble.

Kindergarten Registration and Orientation

Kindergarten registration is OPEN for the 2025-26 school year. If your student will turn five (5) on or before September 30, 2020, your child is eligible to enroll. If you have not yet initiated the registration process for your rising kindergarten student, please do so soon! https://marshallroades.fcps.edu/student-services/student-registration

There will be a kindergarten orientation on Tuesday, April 1 at 10:00 am for parents and rising kindergarten students and no registration is required. The event will last about an hour and begins promptly at 10:00 am. A tour of the school will be included.

If you have any registration questions, please contact Shelly Koshuta at mmarcumkoshu@fcps.edu.

Spring AAP Newsletter

Please read the attached newsletter to learn how to request AAP services at Marshall Road for the 2025-2026 school year. All forms are due April 15, 2025. Families will be notified of decisions by early June.

Student Intention for the 2025-26 School Year

If you are moving over the summer and will not be returning to Marshall Road School next year (or the respective middle school for rising 7th graders), please contact the school registrar, Shelly Koshuta, at mmarcumkoshu@fcps.edu or call the office at 703-937-1500. Please complete the Student Intention Form and email it to Shelly Koshuta. Paper copies will be sent home in Tuesday Folders on March 25.

If you are moving over the summer but still living in the Marshall Road boundary, it is still important to contact the school registrar, so we can update the new address in the school computer system.

Staff Spotlight

Staff Spotlight

Ms. Hoffman is the school librarian and this is her 10th year at Marshall Road. Her favorite thing about working at our school is the people. From the first day she came into the building there was a palpable sense of kindness and community which is special and rare!

Ms. Hoffman loves to travel. Between studying abroad with the Semester at Sea program in college and backpacking through Europe after college, she has been to a total of 23 countries! Since starting a family her international travel has slowed quite a bit and these days she does a lot of reading and daydreaming about traveling. However, she is very excited to give her kids the travel bug too (once they get a little older and traveling becomes more manageable IYKYK haha). A fun fact about Ms. Hoffman and her travel days is that she went skydiving while traveling in South Africa!
