Willow Springs Students Win ExploraVision Regional Competition with Innovative Pollination Project

Two bright young minds from Willow Spring Elementary, Luciana Nishanian and Scarlett Lin, have won the regional competition in the prestigious Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision contest! Their project, Electro-BUZZ: Redefining Pollination for a Resilient and Sustainable Future, is now moving on to the national competition.

Electro-BUZZ is a groundbreaking idea that uses smart drones to pollinate plants just like bees. With pollinators struggling and global food demand rising, these drones step in to help farmers and the environment. Powered by solar, wind, and kinetic energy, Electro-BUZZ drones work together to cover large areas efficiently. Their Smart Hive technology tracks pollination, ensuring a sustainable and eco-friendly future for farming.

Luciana and Scarlett’s success in ExploraVision highlights the power of STEM education, creativity, and teamwork. The entire Willow Spring community is cheering them on as they prepare for the next stage of the competition. Congratulations and good luck at nationals!

A Note from the Principal's Desk

Dear Willow Springs families,

This has been a week full of excitement and powerful learning opportunities. We began our week learning about the Electro-BUZZ project that won our students a regional award in the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision contest. It is an exciting and innovative project, and we are so proud of them!

This week, our 5th grade students took their first SOL test of the year, our Kindergarten students performed in the 3 Piggy Opera, and 2nd and 4th grade students were treated to an in-person author visit. Now, we get to end our week on a very high note with Spirit Night at Fairfax High School. Who will win, the Willows or the Foxes??

Don't forget that students don't have school on Monday or Tuesday.

We wish all of you a relaxing & rejuvenating weekend filled with happy moments. Thank you for sending us your best every day! #WillowPride

Sincerely,

Dylan Taylor, Principal

Ipsa Stringer, Assistant Principal

Laura Tapper, Assistant Principal

Green Team

SOL

Spring 2025 SOL Testing Calendar

As you plan your spring and summer activities and travel, please keep in mind that our 3rd - 6th grade students will be taking standardized tests (SOLs) in May and June.

If you can avoid traveling or appointments that will keep your child out of school on a scheduled testing date, that would be greatly appreciated and will benefit your child.

Students tend to prefer taking these tests in their classrooms and learning spaces with their peers and their usual teachers. When students are absent on a testing day, they are eligible for a makeup opportunity, but the makeup test will be given by any available staff, and it will not take place in the classroom.

The testing dates are listed below, and the testing calendar is linked here. Please know the schedule is subject to change.
