Readathon

BMP Readathon Fundraiser

March is National Reading Month, and we want to celebrate in a big way by helping our school/PTA raise funds!  You can help by:

1. REGISTER YOUR STUDENT - Every student that is registered enters their class for a chance to win free breakfast! Registering is completely free. Go to http://getmovinfundhub.com/ to register or re-register and complete their website by uploading a picture of your child. School identifier is 654425910e331

2. DONATE - If you would like to, make an online donation.

3. SHARE - Share your child’s page with family, friends, and on social media.

Our school goal is to raise $5,000 which will go towards fun events at the school for our students and our teachers, classrooms, field trips, and upgrades we can help with during our school’s renovation.

Additionally, the class that raises the most money will get to choose a lunch, an extra recess, an ice cream party, or an extra “whatever you want” PE class.

Thank you for your continued support of our school, your student, and commitment to the success of our school and community!

Your Help Needed...

Bren Mar Park staff remind our families to help with creating a safe environment and being courteous in our local neighborhood, especially during arrival and dismissal times.  Traffic during these times can be unsafe for pedestrian traffic or prevent families from leaving or arriving to their homes.

As a community, please remember and honor the Bren Mar Park requests:

- Use Kiss & Ride: Families who drive their children to school should utilize the Kiss & Ride process. This helps to minimize congestion and ensures a safer drop-off experience for all. Please follow the designated Kiss & Ride procedures to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.

- Walking to School: For those families who walk their children to and from school, please be sure to follow any guidance or direction provided by our staff members. Their instructions are designed to keep everyone safe during arrival and dismissal times.  Cars should not be parked in the local neighborhood and children then walk onto the school campus.

Follow all Traffic Laws and Guidance:  Families who choose to drive a car to the school building are expected to follow all traffic safety laws in support of  a safe local community, especially during arrival and dismissal.  Such laws include:

           - Park in legal spaces; do not park in front of driveways, within 15 feet                 of an intersection or in a fire lane

           - Drive forward; do not complete a U-turn on Beryl Road

           - Be aware of and follow traffic safety staff directions

We thank you for your support and collaboration in helping us to make Bren Mar Park a safe and welcoming place for everyone!

Spirit Day, Idioms, on Friday, April 4

BMP Idiom Day - Explore the fun of figurative language

Join us on Friday for a special spirit day.  Dress up as an idiom!  An idiom is a group of words that doesn't exactly mean what the words say.  Examples are:

Don't cry over spilled milk.

Under the weather.

Hold your horses.

Two peas in a pod.

Middle School Start Time Survey

Last year, FCPS held community forums and surveyed middle school families regarding middle school start times. Now, we would like to hear from all staff and families on the possibility of adjusting school start times across the division. The goal remains to begin middle school at 8 a.m. or later at the start of the 2026-27 school year.

On April 1, a survey link will be sent by email to staff, parents/caregivers, and students in grades 5-12. The confidential survey will be open for two weeks and will be available in multiple languages.

Prepare Your Child for Kindergarten

Specialist Spotlight - Math

What is Strategy-based Fact Instruction?

It is helping students to become flexible thinkers and using what they know to problem solve.

Here are some examples of strategies for basic addition:

  • Counting On - Yes, this is a strategy. It’s not the most efficient, but it’s better than counting all.

For example, one way to find 8 + 4 is to count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and then 9, 10, 11, 12.  So counting on from 8 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12) is definitely more efficient. It is a strategy to know that when solving 4 + 8, you can count on starting at the bigger number.

  • Make A Ten - This strategy is for students who understand composing and decomposing numbers. Basically, you split one addend to make a ten out of the other addend.

For example, to solve 8 + 4, I would split the 4 into 2 + 2, use 2 to make a 10 with the 8, and then add the other two. So…8 + 4 = 8 + 2 + 2

  • Use Doubles - Students learn their doubles (2 + 2, 3 + 3, 4 + 4, etc.) quite easily. Knowing their doubles can help with near-doubles facts, like 6 + 7.

For example, ask a student by 6 + 7 and ask them: What’s 6 + 6? Most likely they will reply 12 and can get the answer.

  • THINK +10 FOR +9 Adding 9’s are hard!  But, adding 10 to a number is easy. So, when you see 9 + 6, you can think 10 + 6 and then just subtract 1.

Here are some examples of strategies for multiplication:

  • Skip counting - It is a popular strategy because kids can catch on pretty quickly.  It also makes a connection between addition and subtraction.
  • Equal groups - Making equal groups
  • Arrays - Arrays are made by setting any object into columns and rows. This strategy is great for visualizing the problem.
  • Split Strategy - Break up the numbers into smaller chunk.  Then add the total.

For example:  43 x7   40 x 7 =     280

                                      3 x 7 =   +  21

                                                      301

  • Halve and Double - One of the factors (numbers in multiplication problem) is halved and the other factor is doubled.  Usually, this strategy is used to make one of the factors into a friendly number to multiply.

There’s a big difference between memorizing and understanding. We want kids to have automaticity with their facts, but we want that fluency to be and understanding of how numbers are related.

Getting to Know Your BMP Staff

Arden Sperty, ECCB Teacher

Stacy

This is my 31st year teaching at Bren Mar Park!

As a kindergarten teacher, I am passionate about early childhood education and setting a strong foundation for students!  The joy that kindergarteners bring to the learning environment is contagious - they keep me moving, singing, and laughing each day!

My daughter was a former mustang and now she is a junior in high school!  I enjoy being a “cheer mom,” movies, road trips (especially those that involve food and ice cream), musicals, and all things Disney!
