Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Greetings, SoCo family,

As we wrap up the month of March and step into a new season, let’s take a moment to reflect on the growth, accomplishments, and connections we’ve fostered over the past few weeks. With spring in full bloom, this is the perfect time to embrace fresh opportunities, renewed energy, and the excitement of what’s ahead.

Whether you’ve been reaching milestones or simply making it through each day with resilience, your efforts matter. Let’s carry this momentum into April with positivity and purpose! Wishing you a wonderful end to March and a bright start to the new month ahead!

Student and Staff Belonging

Trash to Class: Art with a Purpose

We’ve continued seeing the fruits of our labor in the art world at SoCo! In our One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Treasure initiative, students from our Art Honor Society continue to paint a beautiful landscape throughout our building. Here are additional trashcans that are beautifully and artistically designed, as well as images of the stairwell outside of our Art classes that illustrate just how much we appreciate “the arts” in Stallion Country!

TRASH

Science Reigns Supreme: A Two-Time Champion!

Julia Sites continues to shine, taking first place in Physics and Astronomy at the FCPS Regional Science Fair for the second year in a row. Her project, The Impact of Municipal Dimming on Sky Glow, earned her a Grand Prize nomination, as well as special awards from the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club (NOVAC) and the National Capital Astronomers (NCA). Inspired by a childhood experience in Texas, Julia proves that early sparks of curiosity can light the way to great discoveries. Next stop: the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair in Charlottesville on April 4—her future is looking brighter than ever!

REID

High Quality Instruction

To finish out March as Reading Month, I’d like to share two additional strategies that we’ve found to be highly successful with improving student literacy at SoCo. To support our incoming freshmen, we are exploring scheduling options that allow more students to enroll in a Literature Lab while also taking a fun elective like yoga or automotive technology. Looking ahead, we are excited to create a “Reading Café,” a relaxed, student-friendly space with flexible seating that encourages reading for pleasure.

School Culture

Art, Ice, and Everything Nice: The South County Art Gala!

Don’t miss out on this vibrant celebration of creativity and community. Mark your calendars for Thursday, April 24, 2025, from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm in the South County High Main Lobby and Library. We can’t wait to see you there!

Honoring the Heroes at Home: Month of the Military Child

April is dedicated to celebrating the resilience, strength, and sacrifice of military children who support their parents through deployments, relocations, and challenges unique to military life. These young heroes face adversity with courage, adapting to new environments and forging deep connections along the way. The Month of the Military Child is an opportunity to recognize their unwavering spirit and the important role they play in our nation’s defense. Let’s honor their sacrifices and celebrate the exceptional young people who inspire us all.

In celebration of this month, our student leadership class is hosting the following Spirit Week days from April 7th – 11th:

Monday:  Military Monday (rep your favorite branch of service)

Tuesday:  Hats off to Military Kids (wear your favorite or craziest hat)

Wednesday:  Purple Up!

Thursday:  Camo Day

Friday:  Pajama Day  (we sleep soundly because of the sacrifices of our military and their families)

AI

A final word …

This is a friendly reminder that school is out on Monday for a holiday and Tuesday as a Teacher Workday, so we look forward to students returning on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

Have a wonderful weekend!

The revenue generated through concession serves as the SCHS Athletic Booster Club's primary source of funding. The money earned goes right back to the sports teams to cover the costs of equipment, uniforms, and more! Any family can volunteer! You do not need to have a student participating in Sports to make an impact! Visit the link below or the QR code and consider helping us out one night! Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Dear Senior Class Families,

There is just one week left until the deadline! After April 7th, we can no longer personalize the yard sign.

With over 400 graduating seniors, we’ve sold less than 50% of the signs. Don’t miss your last chance to celebrate their achievements!
