Principals' Update

Dear Freedom Hill Families,

Spring is here! We hope all are enjoying the warm turn in weather as our world comes alive again with much promise and excitement. A big shout out to PTA volunteer Mrs. Paredes, who somehow scheduled our Family Dinner Out event at Ben & Jerry's (ahead of time!) for a 72-degree day. It was such a pleasure to see so many Freedom Hill families, and to have my first experience scooping so many types of ice cream for our students!

Spring brings the opportunity to participate in many fabulous school events. As you will see below, we have an action-packed calendar approaching. This year's extra special event will be our 75th Anniversary Celebration. We are eager to invite all Freedom Hill current and alumni students, families, and staff for what promises to be a truly wonderful day. Please consider sharing our invitation images below on your social media to help get the word out to families who might not currently attend. Pictured below - FHES parent Afiaa Alwazir and her crew were here this week working on a very special video to commemorate the event!

With all of this fun, let's not forget that our students are learning a great deal, and our 3rd quarter of academics ends this week. Our teachers continue to implement our new language arts curriculum with success, and our school data shows our students are growing quickly in mastery. Before you know it, Staff Appreciation Week will arrive! There is an opportunity below to contribute to the success of this event, and to help thank our incredible staff members.

Have a great week!

In partnership,

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Tim Scesney, Assistant Principal

Holly Sims, Assistant Principal

🧸 Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

Online registration for the 2025-26 school year is open. Parents / caregivers may register their children online for kindergarten through 12th grade. Learn how to begin the online registration process. When registering, parents / caregivers will need to create or log in to an existing SIS ParentVUE account

There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:

  1. Determine eligibility.
  2. Identify your local school.
  3. Gather documents.
  4. Fill out forms.
  5. Schedule an appointment at Freedom Hill with Ms. Sujo at (703) 506-7800 or email at ssujoromero@fcps.edu

After the appointment at Freedom Hill (the student and one guardian must be present), the student and family will be invited to attend our Kindergarten Orientation on April 1, 2025.  Read more about the registration process. For additional information, please contact Ms. Sujo with the contact information above.

💌 Seeking Gift Card Donations to Celebrate Our Wonderful Staff! 💌

Staff Appreciation Week in May will be here before you know it! We know that our community always appreciates our classroom teachers. Did you know that there are so many other individuals behind the scenes who make Freedom Hill a welcoming place? Instructional Assistants, Specialists, Office Staff, Food Service Workers, and more all contribute with warmth and positivity each day. We would like to honor them with a gift card giveaway.

We’re collecting small denomination gift cards ($5, $10, or $20) to local favorites like Target, Chipotle, Starbucks, Panera, and more.

These gift cards will be used as fun incentives and prizes to recognize and celebrate the hard work and dedication of our amazing teachers and staff.

If you’d like to contribute, please drop off your gift cards at the front office any time during school hours.

🚀 Prepare for a Summer of Learning and Fun

Registration will be available soon for summer camps offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students. Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA) camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools. Registration begins for these programs on Monday, March 10th, and ends Friday, June 6th.

Tech Adventure Camp (TAC) is a week-long exploratory camp designed to allow current K-5 students to explore activities in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), culinary arts, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. Watch this video about CTE camps.

E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for students in grades 2-5 who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Students take part in four daily classes related to dance, music, theater, and visual art. They work with FCPS fine arts teachers who create fun and engaging classes.

For more information, see the Summer Learning page.
