Roadrunner Rundown

March 17, 2025

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We are happily anticipating the arrival of spring this week after the frigid winter! The beautiful changes and growth we see in nature this time of year are a wonderful visual of the growth we are seeing in our Roadrunners. While the process of a bud blooming into a flower varies, so it is for our students. We are honored to partner with you in preparing the soil and giving the right amounts of sun and rain to assist in this spectacular growth.

We are  grateful for the many ways the MRES PTA supports our school, staff and students. These amazing contributions are possible because of parents who serve on the board and volunteer in a myriad of ways. Please consider how you might get involved with the PTA. One present need is for several parents to serve on the 2025-2026 PTA Board. Please find more information about the nomination process in the PTA Update section below.

We continue to need your help at arrival and dismissal to help ensure the safety of students and staff. Do not make u-turns on Rachel Lane or stop on Marshall Road to drop off students.

Have a great week!

Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett and Kelly Willis

School Events and Information

Attendance Matters

Routines are beneficial for everyone! Daily attendance routines can reduce stress, increase your child’s self-confidence and lay a foundation for good attendance in later grades. Positive attendance routines at home can help alleviate morning panic and frustration.

Lost & Found

Please check our Lost & Found for items you are missing. Unclaimed items will be donated on Friday, March 28. Thank you.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener

FCPS is committed to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning. FCPS approved a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener that students use to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding, and managing emotions, establishing, and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success. All students in grades 3-12 have the opportunity to participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring.

Marshall Road ES has scheduled the administration of the spring SEL Screener for Wednesday March 19-Friday March 21.

Opt-outs forms can be completed on FCPS’s Parent Digital Consent System. https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/social-emotional-screener

If you cannot access the online form or have other questions, please reach out to Meg Gillespie at mmgillespie@fcps.edu or 703-937-1558.

Spring Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests

These assessments measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills reflected in state standards. The content tested varies by grade level. See the scheduled dates for this spring and please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions about the assessment. We ask that you do not schedule appointments on the day of your child’s SOL test. Please contact Kelly Willis at kawillis@fcps.edu if you have any questions or know your child will be absent on the day of testing.

Earth Day

Earth Week Photo Request

In preparation for Earth Week (April 21-25) we are collecting photos of students enjoying nature to use in a slideshow for the Roadrunner Report (the morning news show). The slideshow will not be shared beyond students and staff. If you have photos to share, please email them to our Marshall Road Garden Educator, Christene Hendon at chendon@fcps.edu.  Students and staff have really enjoyed watching these in the past.

Staff Spotlight

MRES Staff Spotlight

I have worked at Marshall Road for 5 years, 2017-2020 and 2023-2025! My favorite part of working at Marshall Road is getting to work with such a great learning community that has strong partnerships with families. I have learned so much from my students and colleagues over the years. Something I enjoy outside of work is traveling and spending time visiting family. Something interesting about me is that I grew up in Boston and am a big Boston sports team fan!
