2. A Note from the Principal

Dear Rocky Run Community-

Only one week to go before the end of the third quarter! As we begin the transition into spring, life at Rocky Run will be be jam packed with SOLs, award ceremonies, and other celebrations. Take a breath and enjoy the warm weather, so that we can hit the ground running for an amazing end to the year.

This weekend, and throughout next week, you may see many Rocky Run families around town with their exchange buddies from the Warriner School in England. As you may recall, I accompanied 26 students and staff members to England in October to experience a typical week in the English school system. It's Rocky Run's turn to play host. The timing is perfect with the cherry blossoms in peak bloom, Alex Ovechkin chasing the NHL all-time goal record, and Nats opening day. There are tons of fun options to show our English friends. Instructionally, the students will attend classes with their buddies and attend some cool field trips to the Spy Museum, the Capitol and the Air and Space Museum. The partnership with the Warriner School has been going on for 20 years and continues to provide meaningful opportunities for the participants.

Next week is also the final week of the third quarter. Please work with your students to make sure that they finish the quarter strong. On Friday, March 28, all students will take part in Career Day for a portion of the instructional day. We believe that the career exploration will be a meaningful experience for our students, and we are grateful to the numerous volunteers that are donating their time to speak with our students.

As always, thank you for your continued partnership and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions. I look forward to seeing you at RRMS soon.

Sincerely,

Peter Kownacki

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28

Thanks to a new program from the Virginia Department of Education, students who are fasting during the school day between February 28 and March 28 can now take school meal kits home at the end of the day. Families will need to fill out a weekly Fasting Meals Request Form for their child or children to receive school meal kits. A separate form must be filled out for each week and each student. Visit the FNS webpage for more information, including weekly request forms and deadlines.

Punctual on Purpose Student Winners

Each week, our Punctual on Purpose (POP!) drawing recognizes students who are on-time to all classes during the prior week. Each week, students have a fresh chance to be entered into the POP drawing. POP winners are announced every Monday, and students can select from a variety of rewards. Please encourage your child to be on time to all classes, including 1st and 2nd period. The POP winners for this week are Gabriella Taylor, Lynn Park, Hanna Dar, Ryan Nagle, Esan An, and Elliot Fuller. Congratulations and thank you for Raising the Ram by getting to class on time!

5. Student Services Updates

Rising 9th Grade Activity Fairs

On Thursday, April 10th, all 8th grade students will attend an activity fair at their assigned high school: Centreville HS, Chantilly HS, or Westfield HS.

8th grade students who are attending high schools other than the 3 listed above will attend at Chantilly HS. Students will be dismissed from class around 9 AM and will return back to Rocky Run between 11:30 AM - 12 PM.

Permission slips were distributed during Rock Time on March 18 and must be returned to your student’s science teacher no later than Friday, March 28 – the sooner, the better.  Students cannot attend the trip if they do not return the signed permission slip.

Students can expect to receive important information about extracurricular activities and learn more about their upcoming transition to high school.

Questions?  Contact Shannon Campbell (SLCampbell@fcps.edu) or your student's counselor.
