Month of the Military Child/Purple Up Spirit Day
April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience. Join us in wearing purple on Wednesday, April 9th for Purple Up! š»Standards of Learning AssessmentsĀ
Students in grades 3-8 participate in state assessments each year. Ā These assessments measure how students are learning the state standards. Ā Below is the current schedule for the spring Standards of Learning tests at Forestville Elementary. Visit the FCPS webpage here for more information about these assessments.
- Grade 5 Integrated Reading and Writing
- Grades 5 and 6 Reading
- Grades 3 and 4 Reading
- Grades 5 and 6 Math (*this includes Math 7)
- Grades 3 and 4 Math
- Grade 5 Science
SOL Parent/Guardian Permission to Retest
The Virginia Board of Education allows elementary and middle school students who fail their spring Standards of Learning (SOL) tests by a narrow margin to retake the test before the end of the school year. Retesting is available when a student fails their first SOL attempt with a score of 375-399. (A score of 400 is considered passing for SOL tests.)Ā Note that retests are not offered for the integrated reading and writing (IRW) component of the grade 5 and grade 8 SOL reading tests.Ā A decisionĀ notĀ to allow retesting will not impact your studentās course grade or academic record.
Ā Parent/guardian permission is required for the school to retest any student in grades 3-8.Ā If you believe that your student would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills on the spring SOL test, submit your decision using the Parent Digital Consent application (https://www.fcps.edu/family-resources/technology/digital-resources/consent).Ā
ā° School Start Times Survey
Last year, FCPS held community forums and surveyed middle school families regarding middle school start times. Now, we would like to hear from all staff and families on the possibility of adjusting school start times across the division. The goal remains to begin middle school at 8 a.m. or later at the start of the 2026-27 school year.
On April 1, a survey link was sent by email to staff, parents/caregivers, and students in grades 5-12. The confidential survey will be open for two weeks and will be available in multiple languages.
FCPS Earth Week š
April 21-25 is Earth Week! While we all work hard to protect our planet each day, Earth Week gives us a chance to learn about new opportunities and make commitments to do even more. We will be doing activities at school and families can complete this BINGO board. On Earth Day (Aprill 22nd) we will be having a spirit day! Students are encouraged to wear green on this day! š
