Principal's Message

March 14, 2025

Greetings, Team Langston Hughes:

March is like a lion and will go out like a lamb!  March is a time of transitioning from the many winter activities into the anticipation of spring.   In addition, it is the time of year when students often begin to display mastery of new skills and concepts.

As we look at warmer weather and brighter days, we want to keep our Panthers focused on continuing to strive to do their best.   I appreciate all of the efforts you continue to put in at home to ensure “success” carries over into the school day, as it impacts our academic standing.    Here are a few suggestions that will make March reporting a productive time of the year.

  • Celebrate your child’s efforts, successes, small wins.
  • Choose one or two key areas for improvement.
  • Consult with your child and teachers when seeking grading reporting clarity if needed.    Remember, grades belong to students.  They are a means by which we teach personal responsibility, natural consequences, good study skills, and the value of hard work.
  • March forward! Stay positive!  Spring is on the horizon!  😊

By now, you should have reviewed your child’s course requests for the 2025-2026 academic year.  Contact your child’s school counselor should you have questions/concerns.  Finally, I hope to see you at our I See Me in Reston – A Celebration of Diversity and Culture!  Consider sharing a dish, as we prepare to taste the flavors of the world!

Take good care!

Principal Mizell

Social-Emotional Learning

This week, during Flex students continued to learn about conflict resolution.  Students learned how to consider possible solutions to problems, determine the negative and positive consequences of each of those solutions, and agree on the best solution for resolving a conflict. Family discussion: Discuss with your student about a time in your life when you had to think about the best way to solve a conflict. What factors did you consider and how did it work out?

I See Me in Reston

Our Student Council Association (SCA) is excited to host "I See Me in Reston"—an International Culture Night—on Wednesday, March 19th, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. This special event will bring our diverse school community together to celebrate the rich cultures that shape our student body through performances, cultural exhibits, and, most importantly, a shared experience of global cuisine.  To make this event truly memorable, we invite our staff, parents, and community members to help us provide an authentic taste of different cultures by preparing / donating a dish that represents your heritage. You are also encouraged to dress in traditional attire to showcase your culture. Your generous contribution will not only highlight the incredible diversity within our community but also give our students the opportunity to experience the delicious flavors of the world.  Complete this form if you can contribute!  Thanks for considering!
