We are continuing to see an increase in student illness related absences, please be mindful of the following:
This is the time of year when we expect to see an increase in the number of respiratory illnesses in our community, including coughs, colds, sore throats, respiratory syncytial virus and influenza. This fall, we also saw a rise in pediatric pneumonia. If your child has a fever, a cough that is worsening or you have concerns that their “common cold” is something more, please take them to a medical provider for evaluation and diagnosis.
We are also seeing an increase in gastrointestinal viruses. Vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration. It is important to stay hydrated when ill. GI viruses are very contagious, so it is important to follow these tips.
To help prevent the spread of illnesses:
- Look for signs of illness in your child.
- Keep children home when they are ill to prevent the illness from spreading to others. If your child has a fever, they should remain home until the fever has been gone for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medications) and they feel well enough to attend a full day of school.
- Keep children home when they are experiencing vomiting or diarrhea. They may return to school 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting and/or Diarrhea
- Teach your child how to stop the spread of illness by washing their hands often, covering their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. For Gastrointestinal illnesses, washing hands with soap and water is the best practice, not hand sanitizer.
- Stay up-to-date on immunizations.

On March 21st, we recognize World Down Syndrome Day. This day is about raising awareness and celebrating the lives of people with Down syndrome. The date, 3/21, represents the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which is unique to Down syndrome. Wear brightly colored or mismatched socks to school on the 21st to show your support of those with Down Syndrome.
The last day to order yearbooks will be 4/20/2025. There are no exceptions.

March is Music in Our Schools Month! In addition to General Music, we are celebrating our Band, Choir, and Strings programs. This week's focus is on our LCES Choir program! We have both a fifth and sixth grade choir who meet once a week for rehearsal. Our choir members have been working very hard to learn many different pieces and styles of music. Some highlights this year have been the fifth-grade choir performing at our Veterans Day Celebration, the sixth-grade choir performing at the Chantilly Pyramid Concert, and both fifth and sixth-grade choirs performing at our Holiday Sing Along. Also, 10 of our sixth graders who were selected by audition will be representing our school at the upcoming All-County Choral Festival. Our choir members' final performance will be at our choir concert at the end of March. We can't wait to hear their lovely voices singing all together!

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has issued a new, first-time waiver allowing students fasting during the school day from February 28 to March 28, 2025, to request take-home breakfast and lunch meal kits. The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) will provide meal kits reflecting the school menu. Meals will be kept cold and must be heated at home.
Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day. If a student purchases breakfast or lunch at school, they cannot pick up a kit that day. Meal kits must be picked up by students at the end of the school day—adults cannot collect them.
Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:
-
March 17, 2025, for the week of March 24, 2025
Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.
