AFJROTC Cadets Take Flight at the 167th Airlift Wing

Last weekend, 47 cadets from Chantilly Academy's Air Force JROTC program had the privilege of taking an orientation flight on a C-17 Globemaster III at the 167th Airlift Wing in Martinsburg, West Virginia.  Prior to their flight, cadets had the opportunity to hear from Brigadier General David Cochran about his career in the Air Force and the mission of the 167th Airlift Wing.

After checking in for their flight, the cadets headed to the tarmac where they boarded the massive C-17 aircraft.  Following a safety check by one of the Airmen, the cadets took to the skies for this very special orientation flight.  While in the air, cadets had the opportunity to tour the cockpit and take in the views.

We are extremely grateful to the Airmen at the 167th Airlift Wing who made this incredible experience possible for our cadets!

AFJROTC Cadets Recognized at Youth Leadership Conference

Four Chantilly Academy AFJROTC Cadets recently had the honor of attending the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) Youth Leadership Conference in Jamestown, Virginia.  Two of our cadets received special recognition during the conference:

  • Cadet Alden received the MOWW Patrick Henry Bronze Medal, recognizing her as the top JROTC cadet from the Northern Virginia Chapter.
  • Cadet Campbell received the President Abraham Lincoln Award, recognizing her as part of the best overall group at the conference.

Congratulations to Cadet Alden and Cadet Campbell for earning these prestigious awards, and congratulations to all of the Chantilly Academy AFJROTC cadets who attended the conference!

Chantilly Academy Highlights

exploring

Mrs. Callahan's husband, Dr. Patrick Callahan, served as a guest speaker in our Exploring the Language of Medicine class this week.  Dr. Callahan is a Pediatric Cardiologist with the Inova Health System.  He spoke to students about the cardiovascular system, cardiovascular disease, and even demonstrated an echocardiogram.  Thank you for visiting Chantilly Academy, Dr. Callahan!

Dr. Callahan demonstrated an echocardiogram, or a heart ultrasound, for our students.

engineering

Engineering Systems 2 students are continuing to construct their guitars.  Pictured here, a student uses a bandsaw to cut the headstock of his guitar.  Stay tuned for updates on this project, which has been made possible by Educate Fairfax and Music for Life.

vet science

It's not all furry friends in Veterinary Science!  Our Vet Science students also care for a number of reptiles in their classroom including Randi, the crested gecko pictured above with our Vet Science student.

cosmetology

Our Cosmetology 2 students are focusing on preparing for their state board exam.  The two part exam includes a theory (written) exam and a practical (hands-on) exam.  Upon passing the exam, our students will be fully licensed cosmetologists in the state of Virginia.

auto tech

We welcomed a familiar face back to our Auto Tech classroom this week!  Will Breslin, a former Chantilly Academy Auto Tech student, came to speak about his experience as a Motorsports Engineering major at UNC Charlotte.  Will took Auto Tech 1, 2, and 3 during his time at Chantilly and has since discovered a major that allows him to combine his passion for both automotives and engineering.  Will is also part of UNC Charlotte's Formula SAE team, 49ers Racing.  Come back and see us again soon, Will!
