Message from Principal Burke

Dear Edison Families,

Happy Friday Eagles!  As always, it has been a busy week around the school. Last Friday,  I had the opportunity to make pizza with our students in Mr. Parham’s life skills class.   It is always such a great experience to work with our students as they build their life skills, and I truly enjoy seeing them grow in hands-on learning environments.

This past week also marked School Social Worker Week, and I’d like to take a moment to express our gratitude for Maria Worthen. Maria provides invaluable support to our students, families, and staff, and we are incredibly lucky to have her as part of our team. Thank you, Maria, for all that you do!

During advisory today, I enjoyed spending time and working with the Eagle Council as they provided feedback on our cell phone policy. I appreciate their thoughtful insights, and I look forward to sharing their feedback with our FCPS leadership team. It’s a testament to our student leaders' strength and their valuable role in shaping our school's culture.

Today I also had the chance to meet with our leadership class to discuss our school climate. I am continually amazed by our students' leadership and advocacy skills. Their thoughtful reflections on what is going well and the areas where we can continue to improve remind me how lucky we are to have such a passionate and engaged student body.  It is a pleasure to lead such a great school and work alongside all of you.

As we move into the spring, our spring sports are in full swing with scrimmages underway, and I can’t wait to get out there and cheer on our athletes. Additionally, our cast of Grease is working incredibly hard in preparation for their opening night at the beginning of April.

Here’s hoping spring is just around the corner and the weather continues warming up!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Amanda Burke

Student Spotlight

Senior Mia Martin-Escandarani was selected by Edison High School to receive a 2025 Student Peace Award of Fairfax County.  She was one of 28 recipients honored at a reception on March 2.  Rep. Gerry Connolly praised the work of the awardees and introduced a Resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives listing all of them and recognizing their work as “the building blocks of a more peaceful and tolerant world.”

Mia Martin-Escandarani shows her commitment to unifying her community through her efforts to interact with others to bring more understanding and compassion to bear on faith differences. Building upon the values she witnessed in her grandparents’ and parents’ lives, she brought the mantra, “truth, compassion, justice” into her own active pursuit. Mia simply states, “I had the ability, and the world needs repair.”

Through the Jewish Community Relations Council Student-to-Student program, Mia attends interfaith dialogues. These conversations allow a space for respect, curiosity, and empathy between groups, allowing Mia and others to see their shared humanity, discover commonalities, and embrace differences.

Is your student doing amazing things that you want to shine a light on? We want to hear from you! Fill out our Student Spotlight Form and let us know. Your student could be featured in our newsletter!

Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)

Sunday, March 9, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour!  As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Ramadan

We will providing an alternate lunch space for students who are fasting and would rather not be in the cafeteria during Ramadan. Students can report to D117 during their lunchtime rather than the cafeteria March 3 – March 28. This is a space for students to use instead of the cafeteria during their lunch, our regular spaces remain available for students to use for meditation/silent reflection. Students can talk quitely with their friends or use the time to do schoolwork. They should not move desks, cause a disruption for neighboring classrooms, or stay for multiple lunches. They are expected to follow the directions of the teacher monitoring the room.

If your student will need to miss instructional time, please complete this google form to document your permission to miss instructional time if you have not already done so.

Become Unskippable - Fentanyl Awareness Campaign

Preparing for Tough Conversations With Teens

Discussing tough topics like fentanyl and other drugs can feel challenging — no matter how close you are with your child. Explain to your teen that it’s important to learn about fentanyl so they know what to do if a friend overdoses. Prepare in advance with the tips below:

  • Set the stage. Choose a casual environment that’s free from distractions. Talk while driving, taking a walk, or doing chores together.
  • Make it a two-way discussion. Ask open-ended questions.
  • Stay patient and reserve judgment.
  • Check in with your child early and often.

Visit our website for more information on how to Become Unskippable with your teens.
