Students from various health science classes at Falls Church Academy had the opportunity to attend and compete at the 45th VA HOSA State Leadership Conference (SLC) in Williamsburg, VA from March 7-9, 2025. Twenty five students attended the conference and competed in the various competitions. We are so proud of their accomplishments!
Congratulations to the following students who placed in their events at SLC:

 A session was provided on orthoscopic surgery technics and the way healthcare professionals hone their skills to prepare for them.
Students enjoyed time together after a tough day of competition.
The Biotechnology Foundation class attended an amazing and full access field trip to the Inova Laboratories. Students learned about this full service lab that provides patients with 24 hour turn around on patient lab work to determine bacterial infections, abnormalities in the blood and organs, present cancers and other deficiencies and diseases. They were offered the chance to learn and practice phlebotomy and understand about the Histotechnician Certification Program offered for individuals with an Associates degree and the Histotechnologist Certification program for individuals with a Bachelor's degree. The students were excited to have such an open group of professionals who shared information on their educational and career paths as well as what personality is best suited to each job in the laboratory.

Pediatric nebulizer treatments, respiratory evaluation, understanding lung sounds, and assessments to diagnose lung function are all part of these students understanding of the respiratory system.
Students in the Pharmacy Tech Level 2 course visited the VCU School of Pharmacy and Inova Pharmacy to learn about the career of pharmacy. Students heard from current VCU Pharmacy students about their path and what to expect as they further their education in this field. In addition, students got the opportunity to tour the Inova Pharmacy Compounding area, medication distribution area and learn about the controlled substance procedures to understand how medications are created, dispensed and monitored. This offered a rare look for these students behind the hospital pharmacy walls.
