Attendance Matters

attendance

Student attendance at school is important all year long. Attendance has an effect on student performance. We understand there may be obstacles preventing students from attending school regularly, such as illness or personal circumstances. That’s why it is so important for our school team to work together with our students and families to remove any barriers. Regular school attendance is not only a basic right of every student but also a shared social value. We all belong here!

Attending school even if your student arrives late is valuable for their academic and social success at school. Please encourage your student to arrive on time every day and maintain regular attendance until the last day of school. Together, we can work toward increasing school attendance rates and improving academic outcomes for all our students.

PTA Read-a-Thon Forms Due 3/15

books

The WFES PTA is sponsoring participation in Read Across America March with a Read-A-Thon taking place March 1 to March 8. Each page the students read will reflect 1 mile traveled, with the goal of reading enough pages to cover the distance from Annandale, VA to San Francisco, CA.

At the end of the week, you can submit the number of pages your child has read (or that you have read to your child) from March 1 - March 8 electronically using this form, or you can fill out a paper version of this form that was included in your child’s Thursday folder. If you plan to complete the paper form, please be sure to keep track of the number of pages your child is reading. Any paper forms completed must be submitted back to your child’s teacher no later than March 15.

The child in each grade who has read the most pages (or has the most pages read to them) will win a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble, and each Read-A-Thon participant will receive a bookmark. But the biggest prize, of course, will be the joy of reading and, hopefully, finding some great new books in the process.

If you have any questions, please reach out to VP, Academics Erin Weber at erinrweber@gmail.com.

Body Awareness Lessons Coming in April

The ChildHelp Speak Up Be Safe Curriculum, a researched-based prevention curriculum for Pre-K through 6th grade, is designed to teach children how to identify abuse, identify and talk to safe adults, and provides five key safety rules children can follow to help adults keep them safe.  The program also teaches students how to identify and build skills to resist all types of abuse including: physical, emotional, sexual, neglect, bullying, and cyberbullying.

A flyer will come home in next week's Thursday folder with more information about these classes. If you do not want your child to participate in these lessons, the flyer has a section to be filled out for that, and it can be returned to school.

Middle School Transition Fair 3/12

Future Planning for Elementary and Middle School Students in Special Education

For families, caregivers, and educators of students receiving special education services.

March 12, 2025 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Luther Jackson Middle School 3020 Gallows Road Falls Church, Virginia 22042

Join Career and Transition Services (CTS) to learn about planning for life in and after high school!

It’s never too early or too late to start preparing for your future. We want to help you start planning for a successful transition from school to life as a young adult. Ensuring postsecondary success of our students with disabilities is dependent on what is known as transition planning. Please join CTS and other support service personnel for an evening focused on planning for the future.

You will have the opportunity to meet and ask questions of representatives from CTS programs and services for students with disabilities, as well as learn about short and long-term postsecondary supports, employment, postsecondary education considerations, Supported Decision Making, and student self-determination as an evidence-based predictor of post school success.

This event also includes two speakers who will discuss IEP transition planning, special education services, and postsecondary options for younger students as they navigate FCPS and plan for their future. A questions/answer session will follow.
