Upcoming Holidays/Observances

National Women's History Month

National Women’s History Month Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Read more about Women’s History Month in National Geographic Kids.

Arts in Our Schools

Art shows, special exhibits, fundraisers, and school and community activities take place annually, traditionally during March, to celebrate visual art education for grades K-12.

Unite to Ignite

National School Social Work Week March 2-8 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS

Thank You Ms. Swittenberg for all you do at LCES!

Daylight savings time graphic

Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)Sunday, March 9, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour!

As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Ramadan graphic

Ramadan started at sundown on Friday, February 28.

This day is an evening-only observance day. There is school on these days, but certain activities that cannot be made up can not take place after school.

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact their child’s principal regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

March is Music in Our Schools Month

Music in Our Schools Month

March is Music in Our Schools Month.  We have been working hard singing, playing instruments like xylophones, recorders and drums, and dancing in general music.  Some highlights this year have been our holiday sing along we had in December, learning to play xylophones with lots of different songs, and singing songs from all over the world.  Recently we learned a kindness song for Kindness week with some sign language.  Soon the kindergarten classes will be working on the Three Piggy Opera, where they’ll perform for their families in April.  Also in April a select group of sixth graders will travel to the Gatehouse Administration Building to perform for the leaders of FCPS.  Come check out the wall near the lobby with pictures of the great music happening here at Lees Corner Elementary when you visit us next!

You won’t want to miss it!

☪️Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28☪️

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has issued a new, first-time waiver allowing students fasting during the school day from February 28 to March 28, 2025, to request take-home breakfast and lunch meal kits. The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) will provide meal kits reflecting the school menu. Meals will be kept cold and must be heated at home.

Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day. If a student purchases breakfast or lunch at school, they cannot pick up a kit that day. Meal kits must be picked up by students at the end of the school day—adults cannot collect them.

Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • March 10, 2025, for the week of March 17, 2025
  • March 17, 2025, for the week of March 24, 2025

Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.

Lost and Found

Lost and Found

Immunizations for Rising 7th Graders

As required by the Code of VA, parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend at a Virginia public school.

In addition, all students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older;
  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older;
  • A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
  • After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents or guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s healthcare provider now to avoid the rush this summer. If your child does not have a healthcare provider, please visit the FCPS Immunizations Resource page to find out where to get an immunization.

Please review the Virginia Department of Health Information Packet for more information on rising 7th grade immunization requirements.

SEL Screener Spring Window: March 10th-28th

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in third through sixth grades during the weeks of March 10th through March 28th. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link: https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/social-emotional-screener. If your child has been opted out of the SEL screener this school year, they will not access it during this window.

If you have any questions, please reach out to our SEL Screener Lead, Jenny Spears at jaspears@fcps.edu.
