A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Welcome March!  Even though the temperatures are still chilly, we are getting ready for spring.  We have several events coming up this spring that will bring our community together.

Multicultural Night - Friday, March 14 from 6:00-8:00pm

This annual event is always well-attended and provides our families a chance to share their culture and pride.  Read more in the article below.

Earth Day - Saturday, April 26 from 9:00-12:00pm

Come out and dig in the dirt!  We will be updating our garden beds, making some creative crafts by recycling materials, and having fun together.  Food will also be available for sale.

As always, thank you for your partnership.

Multicultural Night March 14

We will gather for our annual Multicultural Night on Friday, March 14 from 6:00-8:00pm!

Families are invited to host a booth at the event. You can bring a special dish to share and show off your home country.  If you are interested in hosting a table, fill out the form that was sent home in last week's Thursday Folder or contact our Family Liaison, Ms. Lily DelCampo at ldelcampo@fcps.edu or (703)721-2100.

Our PTO will be selling plates that families can use sample all the food from around the world.

If you are able to help set up before or clean up after the event, you can reach out via the Mount Eagle PTO What's App group or via email at mteaglepto@gmail.com.

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28, 2025

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has issued a new, first-time waiver allowing students fasting during the school day from February 28 to March 28, 2025, to request take-home breakfast and lunch meal kits. The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) will provide meal kits reflecting the school menu. Meals will be kept cold and must be heated at home. Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day. If a student purchases breakfast or lunch at school, they cannot pick up a kit that day. Meal kits must be picked up by students at the end of the school day—adults cannot collect them. Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • February 24, 2025, for February 28 and the week of March 3, 2025
  • March 3, 2025, for the week of March 10, 2025
  • March 10, 2025, for the week of March 17, 2025
  • March 17, 2025, for the week of March 24, 2025

Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.

🤧 Protect Yourself and Your Community From the Flu

Fairfax County is experiencing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. The Fairfax County Health Department reports that visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings. Read a letter from the health department

The health department suggests taking the following steps to reduce the spread of flu and other germs:

  • Cover coughs and sneezes. If you must be around others while ill, wearing a mask can help reduce spread.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available (with supervision for younger children).
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces.

According to the health department, to help prevent or reduce the spread of illness it is important for individuals who are sick to stay home and away from others until symptoms improve and until they have been free of fever for at least 24 hours. Visit this Attendance webpage for guidance on when your child should go to school.

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.
