Oak Hill Math Night!

When: Thursday March 20, 2025 from 5pm to 6pm

Where:  Enter at Door 1

Come join your Oakie community for a fun Oak Hill Math Night!  There will be different themed rooms with math games you can play with your Oak Hill student.  There will even be some opportunities to earn some prizes! We will also hold three 15 minute whole group sessions where we can do math together and learn about how focusing on student thinking is an important value at Oak Hill.  We look forward to seeing you there!


Middle School Transition Fair 3/12

FCPS Career & Transition Services invites you to the Middle School Transition Fair for elementary and middle school students in special education, focusing on future planning and successful transitions to adulthood. This event will help you start preparing for life after school, ensuring postsecondary success for students with disabilities through transition planning.

Time: 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

📍 Location: Luther Jackson Middle School

You will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from a range of CTS programs and services for students with disabilities, as well as learn about postsecondary education, training, and employment opportunities. The fair presentation will cover: Building Independence & Expectations, Academic & Career Planning, Career & Technical Education Academy Courses, CTS Elective Courses, Postsecondary Education & Training Opportunities, Turning 18 & 22, and Adult Support Services.

Coates ES Boundary Study Meetings

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is conducting a division-wide review of school boundaries, with the first round of community meetings that were held between mid-November and mid-December 2024, followed by virtual sessions in January and February 2025.

However, the Coates Elementary School boundary study is a separate effort to address capacity challenges at the school. On February 20, 2025, the Fairfax County School Board received recommendations for the study’s scope. A final decision on the scope of the Boundary Study is expected at the March 13, 2025, School Board meeting.

Once the scope of the boundary study is approved by the School Board, FCPS staff will develop possible program and/or boundary change scenarios within the approved scope. These scenarios will be shared with the community, and opportunities for public input will be available through in-person and virtual meetings on: 

  • Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Virtual via Zoom – Register here. For the virtual meeting, registration is required to receive the Zoom link.
  • Monday, April 7, 2025 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. In person - Coates Elementary School - Cafeteria 

Each meeting will offer the same presentation and opportunity for community feedback, with language interpretation available. Families and community members can review the proposed changes and share their input.

Oak Hill 5K T-shirt Design Contest

Enter the t-shirt design contest for our Oak Hill 5K!  The winning design will receive a free t-shirt.  Entries due Friday, March 14th to the library in person or electronically to Mrs. Dolenc at mrdolenc@fcps.edu.

1.  Must include the phrase "Oak Hill 5K" and the year (2025).
2.  Use a white 8.5x11 piece of paper.
3.  No more than 3 colors including black.
4.  Write first and last name, grade, and teacher name on back of entry.


Preorder Your Yearbook Now!

Yearbooks are on sale for $19 until April 4th.  They will be distributed to your student in June.  Please order online at www.strawbridge.net. Use Oak Hill's code YB30399.

There will be a very limited number of extra yearbooks available at the end of the year, so if you are interested in a yearbook, please pre-order.

Daylight Saving Begins March 9th

Sunday, March 9, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour!

As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation.  Youth Art Month

encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety. The program provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences unlike any other curriculum subjects, including:Problem solving,Creativity,Observation, and Communication.

 Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music

Theatre In Our Schools (TIOS) is a celebration of theatre in our schools and schools in our theatres. Sponsored by the American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE) and the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA), the goals of TIOS are to raise public awareness of the impact of theatre education and draw attention to the need for more access to quality programs in and out of school for all students.

National School Social Work Week

March 2-8 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential.  Thank you to Oak Hill's wonderful social worker, Mrs. Cammy McCleskey!


New Winter Screener/Growth Reports for Elementary Families (VALLSS, iReady)

Family score reports for winter academic screening/growth assessments will be centrally distributed through SIS ParentVUE (PVUE) Documents. 

Elementary school families will receive two PDF documents as part of winter growth reporting. All winter growth reporting documents are expected to be posted in PVUE/School Data Tools by Friday, March 7.

• VALLSS reports for grades K-3 are redesigned to include an explanation with results from both fall and winter all on one page.
• New iReady growth reports for grades 1-6 come with a new academic growth cover letter explaining the report. Families will receive the cover letter plus one page for each iReady test, reading and/or math.


Student Fasting Meal Kits

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has issued a waiver allowing students fasting during the school day from February 28 to March 28, 2025, to request take-home breakfast and lunch meal kits.  If a student purchases breakfast or lunch at school, they cannot pick up a kit that day. 

Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the following deadlines:

  • March 10, 2025, for the week of March 17, 2025
  • March 17, 2025, for the week of March 24, 2025

Spelling Bee

Congratulations to all of our Spellers!  The Spelling Bee last week was a big success.  Students were very confident and did a great job!  Junior Champions were 1st grader Caleb T. and 2nd grader Rishi V.  Our School Champion was 6th grader Udai E. and the runner up was 6th grader Advaith  A.  Udai will go on to the County Bee in March.

Summer Opportunities

FCPS Summer Camps - Registration opens 3/10

Registration will be available soon for summer camps offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students. Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA) camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools. Registration begins for these programs on Monday, March 10, and ends Friday, June 6.

Tech Adventure Camp (TAC) is a week-long exploratory camp designed to allow current K-5 students to explore activities in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), culinary arts, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. Watch this video about CTE camps.

E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for students in grades 2-5 who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Students take part in four daily classes related to dance, music, theater, and visual art. They work with FCPS fine arts teachers who create fun and engaging classes.

Chantilly Girls Basketball Camp flyer

Chantilly Athletic Boosters is having a girls basketball camp for 2nd-9th grade girls. VIP CAMP at Rocky Run

This summer FCPS Middle School After-School Program and Neighborhood & Community Services present VIP SUMMER CAMP. Rocky Run MS site will serve rising 7th and 8th graders from Franklin MS, Katherine Johnson MS, Liberty MS,  Rocky Run MS and Stone MS.     

VIP Camp will run from July 1-31 at Rocky Run MS andtransportation will be provided. Applications and more information coming soon!!

Budget

Your child deserves the best teachers, safe schools, and the resources to achieve their highest academic potential! On Feb. 20, the School Board unanimously approved the FY 2026 Advertised Budget to invest in what works: competitive salaries to attract top educators, expanded learning opportunities, and school safety improvements.

Now, it’s time for the next step! The budget moves to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, with opportunities for the community to provide feedback from Feb. 24 through April, before a final vote in May.
