Energy Star Award 2024
Cub Run has been awarded the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Award for 2024! A big thank you to our custodial team and staff for helping us achieve this award. We are committed to being as energy efficient as possible and are honored to receive this award!
Cub Run Connect & Learn Night!
Please join us on March 12th from 6:00-7:30 pm for Cub Run’s Connect and Learn Night! In addition to the PTA-sponsored Science Fair, you are invited to connect and engage with other families while you learn about ways to help your child practice a variety of skills at home in math, language arts, and social-emotional wellness. We will also have interactive stations where students can “show that they know” as they make estimations and use their critical and creative thinking skills. We hope to see you there!

Chronic Absenteeism
For school year 2024-2025, school accreditation ratings in Virginia are based on student performance across nine school quality indicators within the state’s new Student Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). One of these indicators is chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason and whether the absence was excused or unexcused. A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10%.
As of February 26th, Cub Run's chronic absenteeism rate is 15.3%. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can move into an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.
Positivity Project
This week, our school community is focused on the character strength of Perseverance. Perseverance means completing what you start despite obstacles. It means never giving up.
People who show perseverance keep trying, even when they face challenges. They stay focused on their goals and work hard, even when things don't go as planned. Those who persevere often achieve great things because they don't quit. They also learn a lot and get better at what they do.
Perseverance can also inspire others. When one person in a group keeps going despite setbacks, it can motivate the whole team to keep trying and reach their goals.
To practice and encourage the character strength of perseverance at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Spring 2025 SOLs (Grades 3-6)
This Spring, our third through fifth graders will take the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Assessment. Please see below for the specific test dates and do your best to avoid scheduling appointments for your student on those days.

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact their child’s principal, Mrs. Miller at mhmiller@fcps.edu regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.
Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28
Thanks to a new program from the Virginia Department of Education, students who are fasting during the school day between February 28 and March 28 can now take school meal kits home at the end of the day.Families will need to fill out a weekly Fasting Meals Request Form for their child or children to receive school meal kits. A separate form must be filled out for each week and each student.To receive meal kits for Friday, February 28, and the week of March 3, please submit the first request form by Monday, February 24. Varsity Tutors Provides On-Demand Support at No Cost
FCPS is partnering with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra learning resources. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors’ services at no cost, including weekly live online classes; on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring; essay editing; and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. VDH Immunization Packets for Rising 7th Graders
As required by the Code of Virginia, parents/legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend public school. All students entering seventh grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:
- Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older.
- Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older.
- A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
- After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent/guardian, at the parent’s/guardian’s sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.
Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with their child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. If your child does not have a health care provider, please visit the FCPS Immunizations Resource page to find out where to get an immunization.

Reminders
Upcoming Student Experience Survey
Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.
All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 24. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, March 3, and Friday, March 7. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose.
We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.
Sixth Grade Fundraiser
Kindergarten Registration
FCPS registration is now available for rising kindergarten students. Your student must have turned 5 years old by 09/30/2025 to be eligible to be registered.
There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:
- Determine eligibility.
- Identify your local school.
- Gather documents.
- Fill out forms.
- Schedule an appointment.
💻Try Online Registration
Online registration for the 2025-26 school year is open for parents/caregivers.
When registering, parents/caregivers will create (or log into an existing) SIS ParentVUE account. Follow the instructions on the page and complete the registration process.
Once you have submitted the registration packet online, our Student Information Assistant (SIA) Mrs. Namrata Saxena will contact you via email to set up an appointment to meet her in person. You can also reach her at 703-633-7500.
If you need a paper copy of the registration packet, it can be picked up at the front office.
