To ensure transparency and celebrate our progress, we will be sharing weekly attendance data in our newsletter. By highlighting this important information, we aim to keep our families informed and energized about our collective efforts to reduce absenteeism and prevent students from becoming chronically absent.
Chronic absenteeism is when a student has missed 10% or more of the school days in the school year. This includes all absences, regardless of whether they are excused and unexcused. Research shows that students who are chronically absent are at higher risk of falling behind and dropping out of school.
We care deeply about all of our students and aim for success for each student. Our partnership to support regular school attendance is critical to that success. Please follow the health policy and send your children to school every day.
|
- Number of students present EVERY DAY: 100 – That’s 12%
- Number of students NOT currently chronically absent: 779 – That’s 90%
- Number of students currently chronically absent (missed 10% of the school days so far this year): 81
- Number of unexcused & travel related absences: 1,021

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023), Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives. There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.
In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources to be provided to parents and guardians of Fairfax County Public Schools. This information may be found at Eating Disorders.
Rising Kindergarten students and parents are invited to attend our Kindergarten Orientation. Families will have the opportunity to meet our Principal and our Assistant Principals, along with our Kindergarten Team who will share some ideas for how to prepare your child for school next year.
While parents meet with our staff, the rising Kindergarteners will do an activity in the Kindergarten classrooms and then rejoin parents later.
Kindergarten enrollment is in progress! If you have not enrolled your child for the 2025-2026 school year, please call the office at 571-522-6000 or email our Registrar, Regina Johnson (rljohnson2@fcps.edu) to schedule an appointment.
Do you know a neighbor with a rising kindergartner? Please encourage them to contact Colin Powell so we have accurate numbers for staffing our classes for next year!
We look forward to seeing you April 1st, 2025 at 10:30 a.m.
A Heartfelt Thank You for a Week of POG Partnership!
This week our school buzzed with excitement and collaboration as we hosted our Grade Level Portrait of a Graduate (POG) Meetings in grades 2-6! It was truly wonderful to see so many parents join us to witness firsthand how our students are developing and applying those crucial POG skills and attributes.
From creative problem-solving to effective communication, our students showcased their learning in engaging and interactive ways. We were especially thrilled to see the learning happening with and between students and parents during the school day. The conversations, the shared discoveries, and the genuine enthusiasm were inspiring!
Thank you, parents, for taking the time to participate in this important event. Your presence and support reinforce the strong partnership between home and school, which is essential for our students' success. We believe that by working together, we can empower our students to become well-rounded individuals prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
We look forward to continuing these collaborative learning experiences throughout the year!
Kindergarten and first grade families, we look forward to seeing you this coming week on March 5th. The kindergarten grade level meeting will start at 9:25 and first grade at 9:55.

Celebrate Read Across America Month with an Exciting Reading Challenge!
Students who choose to participate should complete one row on the bingo sheet—this can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. Once finished, they can return their completed sheets to the library for a prize! Let the adventure of reading commence!
Students can get a copy of the reading challenge sheet from their teacher or the library.
The Colin Powell SCA wants to say a big Puma thank you to everyone who came out to our Karaoke Night fundraiser last week. It was wonderful to see so many families enjoying the time together, and we have some very talented Pumas in our community! Even better, we came together and raised $1,431 that night to support Shelter House and Pet Haven, helping neighbors experiencing emergency homelessness right here in Fairfax County. Thank you so much, Powell Pumas!!

In celebration of Black History Month, visit our YOUseum to see a powerful exhibit created by two families in our community. The display features influential Black figures who have graced the cover of Time magazine, highlighting their contributions and achievements. Some important Black people featured are Coco Guaff, Amanda Gorman, Michelle Obama, and Jackie Robinson. Thank you to Kelsi Wood and family (1st grade Korean Immersion) and Elijah and Ethan Stevenson (6th grade) for this important display.
You're invited! Join us on Friday, April 4th from 6:30-8:00pm for an evening of celebration. Families will have the opportunity to sign up to create a display of what makes their family unique, to include food samples, crafts/games, traditions, and more. We invite everyone to dress in any traditional attire (or any clothing that makes you unique!) for a diversity parade during the event. We hope to see you all there!
The week of March 3 is Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Week! We hope you will join us in SELebrating by participating in our Spirit Week, starting Monday, March 3. The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-6 during the weeks of March 10-28. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link: https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/social-emotional-screener
If you have any questions please reach out to our SEL Screener Lead, Carsen Leeder, at cbleeder@fcps.edu.
