Roadrunner Rundown

February 24, 2025

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you soaked in some sunshine and enjoyed the warmer weather over the weekend. We are happy to see warmer days in the forecast and the opportunities to spend time outdoors.

We have some very special guests coming to MRES next Monday, players from the George Mason University basketball teams, along with coach Lamar Butler (former player).  As a means of supporting the local community, they will be greeting students out front during arrival and in the cafeteria during breakfast, appear on our Morning News Show, read a story with some classes and then join a portion of PE class. They are looking forward to sharing their love of learning and basketball with our students.

Have a great week!

Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett, and Kelly Willis

School Events and Information

Attendance Matters

Being in school helps students establish strong peer, teacher and school staff relationships. Strong daily attendance also helps to create trusting relationships that motivate students to participate in learning. Don’t forget, children learn best from hand-on activities and through meaningful interactions with their teacher and other students. These can only happen in-person in the school building!

Lightspeed - Student Internet Access Report

FCPS recently partnered with Lightspeed for internet content filtering.  Parents/Guardians can get information about their child's activity on their FCPS laptop. Sign up to receive a weekly Parent Report from Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, which will provide a list of the top sites the child visited that week. Learn more about the Lightspeed Parent Report and sign up process.

Staff Spotlight

MRES Staff Spotlight

Ms. Manocha, MRES 5th Grade teacher, is the winner of the parking spot this week. Ms. Manocha has taught for 13 years, and this is her second year at Marshall Road. One of her favorite parts about working at MRES is the love you feel when you cross the doors, when all kids are being themselves and laughing. Ms. Manocha shared that she loves the diversity in our school, all the different languages and cultures and how we embrace one another's uniqueness. Ms. Manocha’s hobbies include reading, dancing and sleeping! Ms. Manocha became pescatarian at age 16 due environmental reasons.

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28-March 28

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has issued a new, first-time waiver allowing students fasting during the school day from February 28 to March 28, to request take-home breakfast and lunch meal kits. The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) will provide meal kits reflecting the school menu. Meals will be kept cold and must be heated at home. Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day. If a student purchases breakfast or lunch at school, they cannot pick up a kit that day. Meal kits must be picked up by students at the end of the school day—adults cannot collect them. Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • February 24, for February 28 and the week of March 3
  • March 3, for the week of March 10
  • March 10, for the week of March 17
  • March 17, for the week of March 24

Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.

Springing into New Lunch Menu Options

FCPS’ Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) has launched several new delicious items this month, including Asian meatball subs, fish tacos with pineapple pepper fruit salsa, alfredo and basil lasagna, and tomato soup. These nutritionally balanced menu items are student-tested and student-approved through FNS food shows, focus groups, and surveys.

As FNS Executive Director Shaun Sawko said in a recent video about new menu options, FCPS is “putting students at the center of every single one of our plates.” See what’s on the menu at your child’s school and learn about nutrition standards at FCPS.

✨ Student-driven food choices are just one way FCPS prioritizes student voice through our 2023-30 Strategic Plan’s Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered.
