LCES Updates 2/28/25 This Week's Updates

Dr. Reid Visited Lees Corner!

Dr. Reid

This week, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid had the pleasure of visiting Lees Corner Elementary School. The visit provided a wonderful glimpse into the vibrant learning environment of our young Polar Bears. The focus on hands-on activities, personalized support, and collaborative planning were all showcased during her visit.  We are incredibly proud of the work being done at Lees Corner ES!

Upcoming Holidays/Observances

Ramadan graphic

Ramadan begins at sundown on Friday, February 28.

This day is an evening-only observance day. There is school on these days, but certain activities that cannot be made up can not take place after school.

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact their child’s principal regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

See the complete school year calendar.

☪️Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28☪️

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has issued a new, first-time waiver allowing students fasting during the school day from February 28 to March 28, 2025, to request take-home breakfast and lunch meal kits. The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) will provide meal kits reflecting the school menu. Meals will be kept cold and must be heated at home.

Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day. If a student purchases breakfast or lunch at school, they cannot pick up a kit that day. Meal kits must be picked up by students at the end of the school day—adults cannot collect them.

Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • February 24, 2025, for February 28 and the week of March 3, 2025
  • March 3, 2025, for the week of March 10, 2025
  • March 10, 2025, for the week of March 17, 2025
  • March 17, 2025, for the week of March 24, 2025

Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.

Lost and Found

Lost and Found

Please have your child check the lost and found this week.  We have several jackets and coats as well as lunchboxes, waterbottles, etc.  Anything remaining on Friday, March 7th will be donated to a charitable organization.

Fun Fit Friday Continues!

Originally we had planned for Fun Fit Friday to end today, however due to all of the cancellation days we're extending it until construction begins ramping up for our renovation. Once we have a final date, we will include it on an NYC message in the future.

Spring Picture Days are Coming!

Class and individual picture day is Thursday, March 13.

There are two ways to order class and individual pictures:

  1. Orders can be placed online at www.mylifetouch.com with Picture ID EVT8TXH78.
  2. On picture day, exact cash or checks can be sent in with your child, using the order form envelope that will be sent home on March 5.

Order any picture package and get a free class picture! Class pictures are not sold separately.

Immunizations for Rising 7th Graders

As required by the Code of VA, parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend at a Virginia public school.

In addition, all students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older;
  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older;
  • A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
  • After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents or guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s healthcare provider now to avoid the rush this summer. If your child does not have a healthcare provider, please visit the FCPS Immunizations Resource page to find out where to get an immunization.

Please review the Virginia Department of Health Information Packet for more information on rising 7th grade immunization requirements.

SEL Screener Spring Window: March 10th-28th

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in third through sixth grades during the weeks of March 10th through March 28th. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link: https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/social-emotional-screener. If your child has been opted out of the SEL screener this school year, they will not access it during this window.

If you have any questions, please reach out to our SEL Screener Lead, Jenny Spears at jaspears@fcps.edu.

6th Grade Basketball Game

We desperately need two parent volunteers for the 6th grade basketball game to lead spirit wear sales and to organize volunteers. Please considering volunteering so that the 6th grade parents who are organizing this amazing event can take some time to watch their 6th graders at the game!

Congratulations to Jaiden Frimpong for winning the T-shirt contest with this awesome design!
