Rock Steady

Dear Families,

We have immersed ourselves in the celebration of Black History Month. Our students have engaged in a variety of meaningful activities, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the contributions and experiences of Black individuals and communities.

Our classrooms have been alive with stories and poetry! Students have explored powerful biographies, learning about influential figures who have shaped our world.

Fourth grade extended learning beyond the classroom with engaging field trip to the African American History Museum, providing students with firsthand experiences to connect with local history and culture.

To cap off our celebration, we were thrilled to welcome The Rock Steady Band for a special performance! Their energetic Go-Go music, a genre that originated right here in Washington, D.C., had everyone on their feet. The infectious rhythms and vibrant sounds provided a fantastic opportunity for our students and staff to celebrate the rich musical heritage of our city and the broader Black community. We are so appreciate to our PTO who provided this opportunity for students.

Thank you for your continued support in making our school a place where all students feel valued and celebrated.

Sincerely,

Amy Briggs

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28, 2025

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has issued a new, first-time waiver allowing students fasting during the school day from February 28 to March 28, 2025, to request take-home breakfast and lunch meal kits. The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) will provide meal kits reflecting the school menu. Meals will be kept cold and must be heated at home. Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day. If a student purchases breakfast or lunch at school, they cannot pick up a kit that day. Meal kits must be picked up by students at the end of the school day—adults cannot collect them. Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • February 24, 2025, for February 28 and the week of March 3, 2025
  • March 3, 2025, for the week of March 10, 2025
  • March 10, 2025, for the week of March 17, 2025
  • March 17, 2025, for the week of March 24, 2025
