Dear Edison Families,
What an incredibly eventful week it has been for our school community! I'm filled with pride as I reflect on the dedication and spirit shown by our students and supporters.
Last Friday, we witnessed a double-header basketball night for the district titles. Our girls' team delivered an unforgettable game, securing a thrilling overtime victory against Hayfield! What a display of grit and determination. Our boys' team battled fiercely, even holding Hayfield scoreless for a significant portion of the first quarter. While they didn't clinch the win, their effort was commendable. Both teams advanced to the first round of regionals, hosted right here this past Tuesday night. Our girls continued their winning streak with a victory over Woodson, advancing to the semifinals. Our boys fought valiantly, but unfortunately, their season came to an end. Last night, our girls played a hard fought game in the regional semifinals, keeping it close the entire time. While they did not pull out the win, they represented our school with pride.
Beyond the basketball court, our Athletic Boosters' Bingo night last Saturday was a resounding success! It was wonderful to see so many families and friends come together, enjoying the fun and competitive atmosphere. Thank you to everyone who supported this fantastic event.
Our talented band and orchestra students showcased their hard work in their pre-assessment concerts this week, and the performances were truly impressive. We wish our choir the best of luck as they prepare for their pre-assessment concert on Tuesday. Good luck to all our musicians as they move forward to their assessments!
Spring sports tryouts have just wrapped up, and we're eagerly anticipating the start of the season. We look forward to cheering on our athletes as they represent our school with passion and skill.
We also want to send our best wishes to our state-qualifying wrestlers as they head to Salem to compete for state titles. We know they'll give it their all. Additionally, our DECA students are in Virginia Beach for their state convention, and we wish them the best in their competitions and presentations.
This week has truly showcased the talent, dedication, and community spirit that make our school so special. Thank you to all the sponsors, coaches, athletes, students, parents, and community members who contribute to our success.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Amanda Burke Principal

We will providing an alternate lunch space for students who are fasting and would rather not be in the cafeteria during Ramadan. Students can report to D117 during their lunchtime rather than the cafeteria March 3 – March 28. This is a space for students to use instead of the cafeteria during their lunch, our regular spaces remain available for students to use for meditation/silent reflection. Students can talk quitely with their friends or use the time to do schoolwork. They should not move desks, cause a disruption for neighboring classrooms, or stay for multiple lunches. They are expected to follow the directions of the teacher monitoring the room.

Mr. Fabian, Mr. Burroughs, and Ms. Roach’s Geosystems students explored significant geologic events in Edison’s own “B Hallway of Time” - a scaled down version of Earth’s history (all 4.6 billion years in 228 feet). Pairs of students researched an event and then placed it appropriately on the timeline to represent when that event occurred. After journeying through time, students read about each event while filling out guided notes.
🗣️ Connect With Your Kids: Simple Steps to Stronger Communication
Teens skip things that don't interest them, including lectures from their parents. How do you connect with your children and really know what's going on in their lives? How can you become “unskippable”?
Effective communication can build trust and understanding, but it takes thought, planning, and effort.
The latest Healthy Minds Blog offers practical strategies to improve communication and build strong, lasting relationships:
-
Ditch distractions and create a safe space where your child feels comfortable opening up.
-
Listen actively and validate their feelings, even if you don't agree.
-
Ask "how" questions instead of "what" questions to get them talking about their experiences.
For more tips and techniques, read the full article on the Healthy Minds Blog, which shares information related to youth mental health and wellness.

📖 Supporting Academic Growth and Reading on Level by Third Grade
The FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Advertised Budget invests in academic growth and excellence for each and every student, which is one of the priorities of the FCPS Strategic Plan.
Across FCPS, teachers, staff, parents, and even older students are invested in helping our youngest learners grow their love of reading from a strong foundation.
The goal is for students to move from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” by the end of the third grade. Reading on grade level is connected to other Strategic Plan goals, including completing advanced coursework and graduating on time.
Last fall, FCPS introduced a new reading curriculum that emphasized the science of reading. Between fall and winter, reading screener results show more than a 4% increase in the number of students in kindergarten to third grade approaching or meeting expectations. Similarly, 3.4% more third graders demonstrate strong foundations of reading and 8.4% more third graders are mastering grade-level standards.
Discover how an elementary school employs a science-based approach, including phonics, to supercharge students' reading.

Eating disorders are behaviors that can lead to serious health problems. When discovered early, eating disorders are treatable.
If you think your child may be showing signs of a possible eating disorder, please contact your doctor, school nurse, or one of the resources listed on the link below. A child with an eating disorder should be seen by someone who understands the treatment of eating disorders. The earlier a person with an eating disorder seeks treatment, the greater the likelihood of physical and emotional recovery.
