Principal's Message

February 28, 2025

Greetings, Team Langston Hughes:

Happy Friday!  The second semester is in full swing! Teachers are teaching, reteaching, and refining their lessons as students work towards demonstrating mastery of key concepts for important spring assessments.

Ramadan begins today at sundown. Throughout the year, as we recognize and celebrate various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to reach out to their child's school counselor for any needed accommodations. These may include arrangements for lunch, prayer/meditation, or silent-reflection spaces and times.  If your child will be using the meditation and silent-reflection space during instructional hours, please complete this permission form.  Families may request Fasting Meal Kits from February 28 – March 28. You can learn more about the meal kits here; you must submit a separate request for each week your student will need a kit after school.  For any questions or concerns, please contact our Dean of Students, Ms. Brittanye Mohrbacher, at bsmohrbacher@fcps.edu.

Don't miss out!  There are just three more showings of our musical, Matilda! It's a performance you won’t want to miss. Get your tickets now!

Additionally, don't miss out on an unforgettable afternoon! Join us this Sunday, March 2nd, at 2:30 p.m. for our National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America celebration—a jazz-infused literary experience featuring award-winning author Kwame Alexander and renowned jazz bassist Amy Shook.  Enjoy live music, poetry, prose, great food, and engaging storytelling in a fun-filled atmosphere. Click here for more details—you won’t want to miss this exciting event!

Our monthly PTA meeting is Monday, March 3, 2025, at 7 p.m. in the school library. We hope to see you there!

Mark your calendar:  Here are our Standards of Learning (SOL) assessment dates and other important information. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Director of Student Services, Marissa Brooks, at mlbrooks@fcps.edu, or feel free to contact me directly.

Lastly, we encourage families to continue monitoring their child’s attendance and academic progress via ParentVUE and internet usage via Lightspeed.

As always, thank you for your continued support!

Take care,

Principal Mizell
