Centreville Students, Families, and Community,
Last week we began our START on Time initiative to support students with attending school regularly and on-time. Our staff was able to connect with students who were tardy, emphasize the importance of minimizing missed instructional time, and support students with any challenges they may be facing. We plan to continue this initiative throughout the school year and work together to improve tardiness.
Additionally, we need the support of our families to address chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism includes both excused and unexcused absences, and when students miss a significant amount of school, they often fall behind in coursework, struggle to keep up with their peers, and risk losing motivation. This can have an impact on academic outcomes as well as social-emotional well-being. The earlier we work together to address attendance challenges, the better the chance of supporting our students in building strong academic foundations and achieving long-term success.
At Centreville, we believe in the power of partnership, and we want to collaborate with you to reduce chronic absenteeism in our community. We understand that life happens—health issues, family circumstances, and even challenges with school climate can affect attendance. However, together, we can help ensure that students are attending school regularly and have the support they need to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. Let’s stay connected, identify any potential obstacles early on, and work together on solutions so our students don’t miss out on these critical learning opportunities.
Looking ahead, our Spring sports season begins on Monday, February 24. We encourage all students to get involved. Studies show that student-athletes perform better in school, build strong time management skills, and stay connected to their community. No previous experience is necessary—just bring your effort and enthusiasm. Come out, give it a try, and be part of something great!
Thank you and Go Wildcats!

March 8 - Food For Neighbors Sorting Event: Centreville High School is proud to announce that we have partnered with Food For Neighbors (FFN) to help feed our local students who deal with food insecurity because even in a county as wealthy as Fairfax, one in four kids in our area are struggling with hunger. Studies show that when adolescents are fed positive outcomes include increased enrollment in challenging courses, higher graduation rate, improved mental and physical health, a decrease in disruptive behaviors and increased participation in after-school activities".
Food For Neighbors is a local organization addressing this problem by collecting food from our community via their Red Bag Program and donating directly to our local schools. The food is then distributed to the students every week through our food pantry.

Breaking Down the Budget: Supporting Academic Growth and Algebra by Eighth Grade: The FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget invests in academic growth and excellence for each and every student, which is one of the priorities of the FCPS Strategic Plan.
Since the 2023-24 school year, FCPS has seen a 9.5% increase in eighth graders taking Algebra I or more advanced math and a 6.8% increase in fifth graders in advanced math.
Studies show that students who complete algebra in middle school have more opportunities to take advanced math and science courses in high school. This can open up new academic paths for students! Watch a video that shows why eighth grade algebra matters.

Learn More About How Your Child Feels at School: The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-12 in March. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop the skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who do not have a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
