Dear Beech Tree Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you well as we approach the weekend. It's been another busy, productive, and cold week here at Beech Tree Elementary, filled with engaging learning experiences for our students.
A key focus this academic year is enhancing student engagement in the classroom, specifically by fostering rich discussions around curriculum content. We believe that encouraging students to articulate their understanding through dialogue strengthens critical thinking skills and deepens comprehension. You may hear your children referencing collaborative learning strategies such as "turn and talks," "partner discussions," and other interactive activities designed to stimulate classroom conversation. We are confident that this emphasis on rich student discourse will positively impact their academic growth.
We were fortunate this week to host a performance by the Glasgow Middle School and Justice High School orchestras for our fourth and fifth grade students. It was a particular pleasure to see several Beech Tree alumni among the talented musicians. This inspiring presentation offered our students a wonderful opportunity to experience the power and beauty of orchestral music and potentially ignite a passion for musical pursuits.
Please note that on Monday, March 10, 2025, we will have a 3-hour early release at 1:00 PM. To assist us in finalizing our plans, Please complete the early release form for each of your children at Beech Tree by Sunday, March 2nd. A response is required for every student. You can find the form at the following link:

We hope you enjoy a wonderful weekend. We look forward to welcoming our students back on Monday, refreshed and ready to learn.
With appreciation,
Principal Clarke

Since the 2023-24 school year, FCPS has seen a 9.5% increase in eighth graders taking Algebra I or more advanced math and a 6.8% increase in fifth graders in advanced math.
Studies show that students who complete algebra in middle school have more opportunities to take advanced math and science courses in high school. This can open up new academic paths for students! Watch a video that shows why eighth grade algebra matters.

Thanks to a new program from the Virginia Department of Education, students who are fasting during the school day between February 28 and March 28 can now take school meal kits home at the end of the day.Families will need to fill out a weekly Fasting Meals Request Form for their child or children to receive school meal kits. A separate form must be filled out for each week and each student. To receive meal kits for Friday, February 28, and the week of March 3, please submit the first request form by Monday, February 24. FCPS’ Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) has launched several new delicious items this month, including Asian meatball subs (pictured above, also available with veggie meatballs), fish tacos with pineapple pepper fruit salsa, alfredo and basil lasagna, and tomato soup. These nutritionally balanced menu items are student-tested and student-approved through FNS food shows, focus groups, and surveys.
As FNS Executive Director Shaun Sawko said in a recent video about new menu options, FCPS is “putting students at the center of every single one of our plates.” See what’s on the menu at your child’s school and learn about nutrition standards at FCPS.
✨ Student-driven food choices are just one way FCPS prioritizes student voice through our 2023-30 Strategic Plan’s Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered.
The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for families, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees at Beech Tree Elementary School. We love our staff members; let's tell them how we feel!
