Message from Dr. Khoshaba
Greetings, SoCo family,
Well, it looks like we dodged a flake! The forecast had us bracing for a foot of snow, but instead, the storm took a detour to the south, leaving us with little more than chilly temperatures and a lot of relieved shovels. While some may be disappointed that we didn’t get a winter wonderland, we’re grateful for a smooth and uninterrupted week of learning. As we head into another busy stretch, here’s what you need to know for the days ahead!
School Culture:
SoCo Hoops Dominates the Court!
This past week, our Boys Basketball team played West Springfield and won big in the District Quarterfinals, 70-46. I couldn’t be prouder of our boys' basketball team—not just for their impressive win, but for the way they played the game. Their skill and determination were on full display, but even more remarkable was their sportsmanship and teamwork. They lifted each other up, played selflessly, and showed respect to their opponents, representing SoCo with true class. This victory was more than just points on the scoreboard; it was a testament to their character and the strong bond they share as a team. Way to go, Stallions!
Standing Strong: Honoring Officer Corcoran!
We want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to our incredible School Resource Officer, Sean Corcoran. As we celebrated SRO Day on Saturday, February 15, we were reminded that Officer Corcoran is the steady anchor of our school community, keeping us safe while also fostering trust and connection. He not only works tirelessly to ensure our campus remains secure, but he also builds meaningful relationships with students and staff, always leading with kindness and professionalism. Thank you, Officer Corcoran, for being a guiding force and a constant source of support—you are truly appreciated!
Honoring Black History Every Day
Our commitment to celebrating Black History continues throughout the month with engaging assemblies, meaningful decorations, and daily announcements highlighting the incredible contributions of Black leaders, innovators, and changemakers. These efforts serve as a reminder that Black history is not just a month—it’s an essential part of our shared story. We encourage our students to take part, reflect, and appreciate the rich history and achievements that have shaped our world. Let’s continue to learn, honor, and celebrate together!
Braving the Cold for Bright Futures:
Despite near-freezing temperatures, 28 South County High School students and four CTE teachers attended the fifth annual Instruction 2 Industry (i2i) Future Ready Conference on February 18. Held at the Inova Center for Personalized Health, the conference allowed students to connect with industry professionals, explore career pathways, and participate in mock interviews and networking sessions. The event, focused on in-demand industries like healthcare, technology, and public service, aligns with FCPS's Goal 5: Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation. Great job representing our school, Stallions!
Read more about the event here: Link.
A Friendly Reminder about Attendance:
As mentioned earlier this year, chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, which is equivalent to 18 or more days. Currently, our chronic absenteeism rate stands at 15%, up from 13.4% last year. There are many factors that contribute to school absences, and we, as a school community, are eager to work with families to support students and improve attendance. If your child has missed 10 or more days of school, they are at risk of becoming chronically absent by the end of the year. Please reach out to your child’s counselor or our Dean of Students, Mr. Ben Gildea (bjgildea@fcps.edu), to access resources and support to help ensure your student stays on track with their attendance.
I wanted to share that I will be out of the office next week on vacation. As a result, there will be no message from me during that time, but I look forward to reconnecting when I return.
Wishing everyone a great week ahead!

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28, 2025
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has issued a new, first-time waiver allowing students fasting during the school day from February 28 to March 28, 2025, to request take-home breakfast and lunch meal kits.
The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) will provide meal kits reflecting the school menu. Meals will be kept cold and must be heated at home. Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day. If a student purchases breakfast or lunch at school, they cannot pick up a kit that day.
Meal kits must be picked up by students at the end of the school day—adults cannot collect them.
Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:
-
February 24, 2025, for February 28 and the week of March 3, 2025
-
March 3, 2025, for the week of March 10, 2025
-
March 10, 2025, for the week of March 17, 2025
-
March 17, 2025, for the week of March 24, 2025
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener
Hello families,
The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 9-12 during the week of March 10th. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link: https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/social-emotional-screener
If you have any questions please reach out to our SEL Screener Lead, Samantha Tolan at srtolan@fcps.edu .
