Attendance Matters!
Absences, even if excused, can lead to academic trouble. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school. Please ensure that your child comes to school even when we have delays. When the school is open, even with a delay, teachers teach, and the students learn.
If your student has missed more than five days of school excused or unexcused, your child is highly encouraged to stay after school to make up for the missed time and get caught up with assignments. Students are expected to reach out to their teachers to arrange to stay after school, or they can come to room 116 on Wednesdays and Thursdays to complete assignments.
Jaguar Excellence Days
This month we will hold our first annual Jaguar Excellence Days. This will impact the regular schedule on Tuesday, February 11th and Wednesday, February 19th. All students grade 9-12 will participate in valuable assessments, lessons or activities designed to help them grow as students. Throughout the school year, we have limited opportunities to provide these assessments, lessons and activities so we are modifying the schedule on these two days to accommodate. All students will be dismissed at the regular time (2:55 PM). Below are details outlining the different experiences being provided.

All Multilingual Learner (ML), formerly ESOL, students will report to school at the regular time each day to complete the WIDA Access. ML testers should bring their fully charged chromebook and charger. Families will be receiving notification in the next week. A reminder that refusing ESOL services does not exclude a student from being required to take the WIDA Access test.

Students in the POD (Category B Special Education) will attend school and remain with their case managers.

Non-testing juniors will be meeting one-on-one with their School Counselor to register for courses for their senior year.

Non-testing freshmen and sophomores will participate in various enrichment activities.

Non-testing students with an Academy course will still be able to attend classes with regular transportation.

Non-testing students that are in an AP (Advanced Placement) course will be completing a practice AP exam and reflecting on their performance.

On Tuesday, February 11, Non-testing seniors will participate in our first ever Ethics Day. Ethics Day is formatted as a business-style seminar for high school seniors, focusing on real-life examples of how to make good decisions in everyday life, exploring ethical decision making, and learning about themselves through scenarios. Students will rotate through interactive sessions, which are designed to teach critical thinking skills required when faced with complicated decisions. Participants will explore their thoughts throughout the day by using six pillars of character: trustworthiness, fairness, respect, caring, responsibility, and citizenship.

The Band and Chorus students will be on their field trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida and return to participate in the second day activities.
These two days are a great opportunity for non-testing students 9-12 to visit a college campus, plan for senior internship, do a service learning project, or participate in another meaningful activity that follows Regulation 3200.1 . Per Regulation 2234, for planned absences, please complete the Jaguar Excellence Absence form and return it completed to the Dean's office in room 116 by Friday, February 7, 2025.

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations
Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!
Starting Monday, May 19, students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization status and submit updated immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE.
Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources. Be wise and immunize!
Students Invited to Share Their Voices at the 2025 Family Summit
The 2025 FCPS Family Summit will take place on Saturday, March 15, at South Lakes High School. Visit the Family Summit webpage for more information.
At the event, FCPS students are invited to showcase projects and advocacy efforts around inclusivity in schools. This is a great resume-building opportunity, and students can earn service hours as well. Students may share their work in a share-fair environment using posters, essays, videos, songs, or art. They will interact with attendees through conversations about their work, ideas, and efforts to foster inclusivity in school communities.
Students must use this Google Form to participate by Monday, February 17. A list of possible projects is also on the form. More information will be provided after the student’s submission is received. Please contact Manuel Gomez Portillo with any questions.
World Language Credit Exam Scores
Your student participated in the World Language Credit by Exam (WLCBE) this fall. Scores are now available for viewing in SIS ParentVUE. Please log into your SIS ParentVUE account using a web browser to access the information: https://sisparent.fcps.edu.
Your student's results from the fall World Language Credit by Exam will be available by the end of January in SIS ParentVUE “Documents” section. Students who tested online receive a cover letter with an official Avant score report. Students who completed the paper-pencil format exam for Sanskrit or Twi receive a FCPS score report. Exam scores can also be viewed in the SIS ParentVUE “Test History” section.

National School Reource Officer Appreciation Day - 2/15
The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) encourages schools and communities to recognize the valuable work of their school resource officers (SROs) during National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day on February 15 of every year. National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day was established in 2022 to recognize the valuable work of School Resources Officers. Learn more about NASRO and SRO Appreciation Day.
Application for the 2025 Student Representative to the School Board
The School Board student representative represents the interests of Fairfax County Public Schools students. The student representative is not a member of the School Board but serves in a nonvoting, advisory capacity. Students currently in grades 9, 10, and 11 are eligible to apply.

Application Information and Deadlines
To be considered for the election, students are required to provide:
- A written component, which is due Monday, February 24.
- A 30-second candidate video statement, which is due Wednesday, March 26. Candidates will be emailed a link to record their video on Monday, March 17.

Varsity Tutors Provides On-Demand Support at No Cost
FCPS is partnering with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors’ services at no cost, including weekly live online classes; on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring; essay editing; and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. No-Cost Mental Health Teletherapy for All High School Students
Is your student experiencing anxiety, behavior changes, or challenges with peer and family relationships? If so, you may refer your child for weekly therapy with a licensed therapist through Hazel Health. Visit the Teletherapy webpage for information on this service.
Student Bus Passes Offer Free Transportation
All Fairfax County middle and high school students can get a Student Bus Pass SmarTrip card to ride the Fairfax Connector and Fairfax CUE buses for free! With the pass, fares are free from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, all year. Learn more about the Student Pass. Complete the application and return it to your school office.
Additionally, students at Justice, Annandale, Falls Church, and Marshall high schools, and Davis Center can ride Metrobus for free. Visit the Fairfax County website for details and approved Metrobus routes. Complete the application and return it to your school office.
Children 12 and younger ride for free on the Fairfax Connector with a paying adult.
