Save the date- Thursday, April 24, for our Family Heritage Night.

A student-created event with performances, booths, food, and fun!

Message from the Principal

Greetings Irving Families!

We always appreciate how flexible our students are when schedules change like they did for the 2-hour delay on Thursday. I want to thank our Kiss and Ride families for a smooth arrival on Thursday. Your packed patience and awareness in the parking lot helped ensure a safe arrival during a very busy morning in the rain. Thank you!

Coming up, our 7th grade Health and PE department is preparing for the Family Life Education (FLE) Emotional and Social Health/Human Growth and Development lessons to begin around Monday, February 24. If you would like to opt your child out of these FLE lessons, there are two ways to notify the school - you may use the Parent Digital Consent System (same login as ParentVue) and click on “Other Forms” and then select “Family Life Education” to follow the prompts to opt your child out or you may have your child return a copy of the opt-out forms found on the FCPS website.  As a reminder, if you would like to review the FLE curriculum, it is available on this website. If you have any questions about the curriculum, please reach out to your child’s Health and PE teacher.

One of the most exciting times at school is when we can partner with our parents, guardians, and caregivers in the classroom! Our Future Problem Solvers Club is on the hunt for a guest speaker. They would love to hear from someone with firsthand knowledge of nanotechnology. The students are eager to learn about its potential benefits for society, possible risks, and all things nano! If you, or someone you know, could share your expertise with our bright young minds, please reach out to Mr. Andrew Croce at ajcroce@fcps.edu. It would be a truly enriching experience for them.

Finally, a little weather heads-up: Please keep an eye on the weather forecast for next week. Any school delays or closures will be announced on the FCPS main website and social media channels. We will keep you posted!

Take Care!

Cindy Conley

Rotary

The West Springfield Rotary Club essay contest is now open! We have had several students with the contest over the years. It is a wonderful opportunity for students who enjoy writing to share their skills outside of school. If you have any questions about the contest, please reach out to Natalie Duncan, After School Activities Specialist, at naduncan@fcps.edu.

Rise Against hunger donation drive

Rise Against Hunger Donation Drive

"Rise Against Hunger is growing a global movement to end hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives and responding to emergencies". Most recently, they have been providing significant support to people in the communities destroyed by fires in California. We have a lofty goal of having all 641, eighth grade students participate in packing meals for distribution on our event day, Wednesday, June 4. To meet this goal, we would like to raise $24,100, which pays for the food, supplies, and distribution. If we can reach our fundraising goal, our students would be able to pack more than 60,000 meals throughout the day.

We are looking for sponsors and partners to help us meet this goal. If you would like to make a donation or know of someone who would like to partner with us to help us reach our goal, please share this link to the Irving Middle School Rise Against Hunger donation and information page. More information will be shared over the next couple of weeks as we continue to kick off our Rise Against Hunger campaign.

Track and Field Season Registration Form is Live!

For planning purposes, we want to make families aware of our meet dates. All track meets will be on Saturdays again, on the following dates: April 26, May 3, May 10, May 17, with the division championship being held on May 31. If you would like to have your child participate in track, please click HERE to register. Students who wish to participate in track MUST have a sports physical dated after May 1, 2024. If your child participated in cross country, they do not need to get another physical, but they do need to register for track through the form above. More information about practices will be shared soon. If you are interested in volunteering to support our Track and Field Team, please email Cindy Conley at caconley1@fcps.edu.

Library News:

This week, the library was buzzing with 8th grade students as they constructed websites about all of the material that they’d covered in Quarter 2.  Librarians were involved in teaching them about the proper way to cite resources that they use in their research.  Ask your 8th grader to see their “Science Website;” you’ll be impressed with what you see!

Our Battle of the Books teams are continuing to prepare for our school competition in March, followed by the countywide match-up.  Team t-shirts are being made and books are being read.  The date of our Zoom visit with author Neal Shusterman is coming up soon, on February 26th.

Keep encouraging your child to visit the library for books they’d like to read.  Ask them what they’re reading.  If they’re not reading anything, try to find a book that you can read together!  Not only can this provide one-on-one time with you and your child, but it can be the impetus for many meaningful conversations.

Ms. Monk and Mr. Brizek, Librarians

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Monday, May 19, students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization status and submit updated immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources. Be wise and immunize!
