2. A Note from the Principal

Dear Rocky Run Community-

We had another amazing week at Rocky Run! I enjoyed popping into many classes and exploring concepts with students. Some highlights include studying the causes of World War I with 7th grade History classes, and coming in last place in a European geography quiz. I thought my time of 51 seconds was respectable, but many students easily beat it. I also enjoyed spending time in the Innovation Lab with our 7th grade science classes building 3-D models of cells.

Classroom visits are always fun, but the best part of my week was spending time with the Principal's Advisory Council (PAC) on Wednesday. This week the PAC met to provide feedback on a classroom reflection form that we hope to debut in the second semester, and de-brief on last week’s team parties. The students provided numerous suggestions that will definitely enhance the experience for all Rams. Engaging the student voice in school issues is important and this year’s group does an awesome job representing their peers and advocating for issues that are important to students.

Thank you for your continued support and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Peter Kownacki
Principal

Spelling Bee

On Wednesday, February 5, 14 students participated in the speaking part of the Rocky Run Spelling Bee! These students advanced from the written part that took place on January 23. After 19 rounds of intense competition, Nikita R. became Champion for the second year in a row. The winning word was emanation. The 2nd place runner up was Aadhya V. Congratulations to our winners and all participants! Nikita will represent Rocky Run at the Fairfax County Spelling Bee on March 23. Special thanks to Mrs. Grover for organizing and leading the bee, our judges, Mrs. Barnhart, Mrs. Legendre, and Mrs. Kroes, and our PTA for graciously providing cookies for our participants!

5. Student Services Updates

Second Semester Schedule Change Request

If your student wants to change their semester electives, please remind them to complete the Elective Change Request form. This form is posted in the Rocky Run MS Student Schoology page with instructions.

Students will be required to sit in their currently assigned courses through February 7. At that time, counselors will review the requests and make changes if possible. Please be aware that many classes are at full capacity, and we do not change core classes or PE periods to make elective changes. If we can accommodate a change request, that change is final, and students will be in that elective for the remainder of the year.

8th Grade Academic Advising

Counselors are wrapping up one-on-one advising conversations with 8th graders. Parents, please check your child's course selections by logging into SIS and clicking "Course Requests".

Please check our Academic Advising website for more detailed information. You can also find the recording of our 8th grade parent coffee on our website under "Rising 9th Grade Information". Thank you for your participation!

7th Grade Academic Advising

Monday 2/10 - Friday 2/28 - Academic Advising

Rocky Run counselors will meet with each 7th grader individually to discuss courses and confirm all classes have been entered in SIS correctly. Students will be bringing home course selection forms. Please review course selections with your child and make sure they enter selections in SIS.
