Message from Dr. Khoshaba
Greetings SoCo Nation!
Winter may be sending us another blizzard encore, but despite the cold outside, our hearts are warm with the wonderful moments we’ve shared this past week at school. It’s a bit ironic—while we’re bundling up against the chill, the joy, kindness, and energy of our students have made our school feel cozier than ever. As we brace for more snow, we also take a moment to reflect on the laughter, learning, and connections that continue to make our community so special. Let’s get to the highlights from a fantastic week together!
Student and Staff Belonging
Principal for the Day
What an incredible day it was as Yanet, Ryan, and Ghazi stepped into the role of Principal for the Day and got a behind-the-scenes look at what keeps South County High School running strong! Like true Stallions, they showed curiosity, leadership, and enthusiasm as they met with various staff members, gaining insight into the dedication and teamwork that make our school thrive. From managing a building to leading others, they experienced firsthand the many moving parts of school leadership. At the end of the day, we took time to reflect on what they learned, and their thoughtful observations reminded us all why South County’s spirit is second to none. Just like a well-trained herd, we are strongest when we work together—and these future leaders certainly left their mark!
High Quality Instruction
Kudos to our Resource teacher, Kim Haynes, for her outstanding instruction on factoring polynomials! During the lesson, students remained fully engaged and on-task, a testament to the clear and structured guidance she provided. Ms. Haynes broke down the process of factoring with step-by-step directions that ensured every student could follow along and build confidence in their skills. Her strong instructional practices and attention to student learning make a tremendous impact—well done, Ms. Haynes!
School Culture:
NHS inductions
This past week’s NHS induction ceremony was a shining example of South County’s commitment to celebrating student achievement with dignity and class. The event flowed seamlessly, highlighting the hard work and leadership of our newest NHS members in a way that truly honored their accomplishments—no need for extra credit to make it a memorable night! This special evening was made possible by strong leadership, careful planning, and the involvement of students as key participants. Congratulations to our inductees, and thank you to sponsors Mr. Mason and Mr. Bigus, the NHS Executive Board, and everyone who contributed to this Stallion-strong celebration!
Guiding Stallions: Celebrating Our Incredible Counselors!
This week, we had so much fun celebrating our incredible counselors during Counselor Appreciation Week! Our amazing PTSO found a sweet way to show their appreciation—treating each counselor to their very own bundt cake. Just like these delicious treats, our counselors bring warmth, joy, and the perfect touch of support to our students each day. Their dedication and care never go unnoticed, and we are so grateful for the many ways they guide, encourage, and uplift our school community. Even though we couldn’t catch all of them at the same time for a picture, we appreciate our counselors for being the icing on the cake of South County!
A Thousand Reasons to Celebrate!
The South County girls' basketball program has become a powerhouse of precision and perseverance, proving once again that they are among the most formidable teams in the region. Their thrilling 51-47 victory over West Potomac showcased their grit, skill, and relentless determination. The highlight of the night came in grand fashion as Laila Tull etched her name into school history, scoring her 1000th career point off the opening tip-off—a feat made even more remarkable considering she’s only a junior. With their unbreakable bond and unstoppable ball movement, the Stallions continue to stampede through the competition, leaving their opponents in the dust. Looks like the road to the championship might just be paved with 1000 points and plenty of wins!
 FCA: Rising and Shining Together
Our Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) members continue to shine as a beacon of positivity and support within our school community. Early in the morning, before the hallways filled with the hustle and bustle of the day, these dedicated students showed up in big numbers to start their day together—lifting each other up and strengthening the bonds that make their fellowship so special. Their commitment to faith, friendship, and encouragement is like a steady lighthouse, guiding and inspiring those around them. We are so proud of their dedication to one another and the uplifting energy they bring to South County each day!
Teeing Up for Launch: Students Take Aim!
Mr. Velazquez’s STEM Advanced Engineering students truly launched their learning from the classroom into action this week as they took their t-shirt launchers to the gym! After weeks of designing, testing, and refining their creations, students had the chance to put their engineering skills to the test by launching t-shirts into the bleachers—bringing their classroom concepts to life in a fun and exciting way. Their designs hit the mark as they worked together to fine-tune their devices and send their creations soaring through the air. It was a fantastic display of both creativity and collaboration, and these students proved they can aim high in both engineering and teamwork!
One Night, Many Acts: A Student-Driven Stage!
The Night of One Acts is a shining example of student creativity and leadership, as our talented performers, directors, and crew members take the reins of this theater production. From choosing the scripts to coordinating every behind-the-scenes detail, this event is entirely student-led, showcasing their hard work, passion, and dedication to the art of theater. It’s a night that highlights the incredible talent and teamwork of our students, and we couldn’t be prouder of the performance they bring to the stage. Great job with leading these ultra-talented thespians, Ms. Schrader!
Staff Spotlight:
Terri Smith is a dedicated educator who has spent 19 years at South County, where she teaches 12th-grade English, Broadcast Journalism, and serves in various roles in our Activities Office. Her passion for education extends beyond the classroom, as she also works with the online platform, Edmentum. Outside of school, Ms. Smith enjoys reading, watching TV and movies with her husband, a Marine First Lieutenant veteran, and their two dogs—a Palmaraniam mix and an Alaskan huskie. Her husband recently completed his dissertation in security studies, adding another impressive chapter to their shared commitment to growth and achievement. Ms. Smith’s students deeply appreciate her dedication and support. Her passion for teaching and genuine care make a lasting impact, inspiring them to learn, grow, and succeed.
Club Corner:
Our school’s Filipino Student Association (FSA) celebrates Filipino food, culture, and language. During their meetings, they learn and share about Filipino culture and learn some Tagalog. Their club activities include playing games, doing arts and crafts, and eating delicious food! FSA participates in International Night, so come see their performance at the school on Saturday, February 15. FSA meets once a month, on the third Thursday of the month. You can email the sponsors Ms. McClinton at mkmcclinton@fcps.edu and Mr. Cabacar at bcabacar@fcps.edu with any questions.
Spotlight: Days of Joy
Trusted Adults
While guiding my Principal for the Day students through their leadership experience, I pulled double-duty by inviting them to participate in a Walk and Talk activity—giving them a chance to reflect on the people who make a difference in their lives. When asked about their Trusted Adults, they named Ms. Sholtis, Ms. Ballard, and Ms. Reid, each of whom they felt truly embodies South County’s Core Values of Trust and Hope. Like steady anchors in a storm, these teachers provide unwavering support, encouragement, and guidance to their students. We are so grateful for their dedication and the positive impact they make every day!
Keep In Mind:
Mark your calendars for next Saturday, February 15, as we come together to celebrate the rich diversity of our South County community at International Night! With two showtimes at 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM, this exciting event will showcase vibrant performances, cultural displays, and delicious traditions from around the world. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the beauty of different cultures and the unity that makes our school so special! Ticket sale details will be shared soon via our Executive Board’s social media, and for any questions, please contact the Activities Office. We can’t wait to see you there!
Wishing everyone a fantastic and relaxing weekend! Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy some well-deserved rest. And since snow might be making another appearance, here’s a little joke to send you off with a smile:
What do you call a snowman with a six-pack? An abdominal snowman!
Have a great weekend, Stallions!

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener
Hello families,
The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 9-12 during the week of March 10th. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link: https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/social-emotional-screener
If you have any questions please reach out to our SEL Screener Lead, Samantha Tolan at srtolan@fcps.edu .
