Message from our Principal

Dear GBE Families,

Can you believe we are halfway through the school year? I am so proud of what we’ve accomplished in our first two quarters together. 2025 started with snow and cold! Our custodial team has done exceptional work preparing our building after the winter weather. We also had community members answer a call on Facebook to help our custodians on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day clean our sidewalks and parking lot. GBE demonstrates what is possible when a school community is committed to caring for each other and providing excellence for our students. No matter what successes or challenges come our way, we continue to remain stronger together. I witness the joy and dedication of each student, staff member, and family every day at GBE and it reminds me how lucky I am to serve you.

In a little over a month, I will reach my five year anniversary serving as your principal! What a journey it has been! Please take a moment to review 10 Reasons GBE Stands Out! I encourage families to share these stories featured on the link with extended family and new neighbors! These are such positive examples of what makes GBE an outstanding school. There are more exciting stories ahead to write together and I am looking forward to the future as we create an amazing place for our students to learn.

Our next big community event, STEAM Fest, is being led by our PTA on Thursday, February 20th from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm! You can pre-order tickets here. Pre-ordered tickets are $2 and tickets sold the day of the event will be $3. All proceeds will be donated to our STEAM program at GBE! Come celebrate and interact with amazing demonstrations, a giant planetarium, and learn more about our STEAM Program at GBE. The PTA will also have Chick fil-A on site for your dinner! We hope to see you there!

You may have noticed that we’ve added a translation bar to the top of this newsletter. Moving forward, we want to encourage our families to use this tool. Providing my letters in this newsletter in multiple languages has always been important to me. Over the years, we have been incredibly honored to hire new multilingual staff that have translated my letters in Spanish, Korean, and Arabic. I appreciate their contributions to ensure my messages are translated. As technology continues to evolve, providing translated communication for our families will remain a priority in our school community with 44 languages represented.

I’m looking forward to a great second half of the school year! As always, I am here for you and your family. Please reach out to my email at djpietzman@fcps.edu anytime with any question or concern you may have. Thank you for being awesome and sending us such incredible children!

Sincerely,

Dave Pietzman, NBCT

Principal

👩🏻‍🏫Proposed Budget Presented to School Board👩🏻‍🏫

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid presented the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget at the School Board meeting on Thursday, January 23. Watch a video of the presentation

As Dr. Reid noted in her January 24 letter to families, “The budget is fiscally responsible and invests in excellence — not just for FCPS, but for all of us in Fairfax County who want a strong community with successful young people, dedicated educators and support staff, and a thriving economy.”

The proposed budget reflects the needs of and FCPS’ commitments to Fairfax County students, families, and community members. It focuses on competitive compensation, including a 7.0% salary increase for all staff to recruit and retain our outstanding educators, administrators, and other school-based and operational staff dedicated to the success of our students; investing in students who require additional support; and continuing multiyear initiatives such as inclusive preschool and safety and security updates.

Learn more on the Budget webpage.

🏅Advisory Committee for Students With Disabilities Seeks Nominations for First-Class Awards🏅

First-Class Awards are presented each year to individuals who support, design, and/or implement inclusion activities that result in positive outcomes for students. The Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD) is seeking nominations for the 2025 First-Class Awards. This is a great opportunity for the community to recognize and celebrate the inclusion efforts of educators, administrators, and students who demonstrate the inclusion of students with disabilities in all facets of education.

Nominees should model excellence in their role relative to special education, have a positive impact that benefits disabled and non-disabled students alike, and be committed to creating an inclusive environment and mindset.

Nominate an administrator, staff member, student, or community partner who has made an exceptional contribution to inclusive practices in Fairfax County Public Schools. Nominations close Wednesday, February 19.

🤝Office of the Ombuds: At Your Service!🤝
