Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Famililes and Friends,

As the second quarter of the school year comes to a close, we want to express our sincere gratitude to our entire school community – students, families, teachers, and staff – for their hard work, dedication, and positive contributions. This quarter has been filled with many highlights including connecting with our community during our Veterans Day assemblies, Thanksgiving Lunch, Literacy Information Session, Family Game Night, and Bingo Night! Our Cubbies have been focused on our C.A.R.E.S. expectations-they have earned pieing us in the face, stuffed animal day, Gratitude Graffiti Lunch, and they are close to achieving the opportunity to silly string us and our teachers and staff at our upcoming C.A.R.E.S. assemblies in February!

We are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made this quarter. Their enthusiasm for learning, coupled with the unwavering support of our dedicated educators, has created a vibrant and enriching learning environment. As we move to the third quarter, we are excited to come together as a school community for our C.A.R.E.S. assemblies to reinforce our school-wide expectations, to host our spelling bee, Kindness Week, our Military Family Potluck, and our Connect and Learn Night in March-please see below for more information.

We look forward to another successful quarter filled with learning, growth, and community engagement.

Warm Regards,

Melissa Miller, Principal

Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Cub Run Connect & Learn Night!

Connect & Learn

Please join us on March 12th from 6:00-7:30 pm for Cub Run’s Connect and Learn Night! In addition to the PTA-sponsored Science Fair, you are invited to connect and engage with other families while you learn about ways to help your child practice a variety of skills at home in math, language arts, and social-emotional wellness. We will also have interactive stations where students can “show that they know” as they make estimations and use their critical and creative thinking skills. We hope to see you there!

Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. We will distribute them to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our staff members are committed to working with families to help every student reach their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS.

Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Social Intelligence. Social intelligence means understanding other people's thoughts and feelings and why they act the way they do.

Social intelligence helps us build good relationships by being aware of others’ emotions and behaviors. It is different from "book smarts" and grows with experience. It also allows people to connect, form friendships, and protect themselves from being taken advantage of. It also helps us read facial expressions and understand what motivates others.

To practice and encourage the character strength of social intelligence at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Thank you for your support!

FCPS’ Proposed Construction Projects Offer Community-Wide Benefits

Fairfax County Public Schools’ updated plans for new school construction, capacity enhancements, and renovations are outlined in the proposed FY 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). Projects include constructing two new elementary schools; renovations at 18 elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools; and relocation of modular buildings.

The proposed CIP was presented to the School Board at the January 14 work session. A public hearing was also held January 14. The School Board will take action on the proposed CIP at its Thursday, February 6 meeting.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Reminders

Elementary School Language Arts Progress Reports

As we shared earlier this year, our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. Students are not expected to master all of their grade-level standards until later in the year. By monitoring grades in each standard the whole school year, you can get a clearer picture of areas where they need to grow most, as well as their overall progress in literacy. The goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might continue to look different, especially in the area of language arts. Your child is continuing to be assessed on end of the year standards with our new language arts curriculum. The second quarter progress report will be reflective of their current progress at this time of the year. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

Arrival & Dismissal Safety Reminders

Sully Station Drive & Bus Loop

We are seeing an increase again in unsafe actions on Sully Station Drive and our bus loop during our arrival and dismissal procedures. If you are dropping your student(s) off in the morning or picking up at dismissal, please utilize our Kiss and Ride/Car Rider line to safely drop off or pick up students. If you are parking and walking, please park near our crosswalk and utilize the crosswalk that is supported by our amazing crossing guard and use our sidewalks to walk to door 4.

Unfortunately, we are seeing students walk/run across Sully Station Drive where there is no crosswalk and we are concerned about our students and families. There is also a safety concern when parking along Sully Station Drive and walking through our bus loop. Please utilize sidewalks because our buses are arriving or departing with our students.

Kiss and Ride Loop (Car Riders)

If you are accessing our kiss and ride loop to drop off or pick up students, please remain in your vehicles and ensure you are dropping off students where we have staff and patrols. If you arrive after 8:40am, you will need to park and walk our students to the main office to check-in. At 8:40am, our staff need to report to their positions to support students in the building.

If you are walking students to door 4, we request that you do not park in the lot and then walk across the parking lot. Cars are making their way around the loop and we want to ensure that our Cubbies do not walk out in front of a car.

Thank you for your partnership in utilizing our procedures to ensure a safe arrival and dismissal for our school community.
