2. A Note from the Principal
Dear Rocky Run Families-
We are off and running in the second semester of the school year at RRMS. As the calendar flips to February, I want to alert you to two important recognitions.
Starting on February 1, we will kick off Black History Month. At RRMS, we will take the opportunity to celebrate Black History Month by affirming African American accomplishments, milestones, and contributions to our nation’s history. Black History Month is an annual celebration that started in the US in 1926. The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln, the US President who issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and Frederick Douglas, an African American orator, social reformer, writer and abolitionist. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
Adding to the recognitions in February, we join with other schools in celebrating National School Counselor Appreciation Week on February 3-7. Please join me in thanking Ms. Bae, Dr. Jacobson, Ms. Marshall, and the Director of Student Services, Ms. Hong for all they do to support our students. We are truly grateful to have such a dedicated and caring Student Services Department.
Thank you for your continued support and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Peter Kownacki Principal Rocky Run Middle School @pakownacki

Punctual on Purpose Student Winners
Each week, our Punctual on Purpose (POP!) drawing recognizes students who are on-time to all classes during the prior week. Each week, students have a fresh chance to be entered into the POP drawing. POP winners are announced every Monday, and students can select from a variety of rewards. Please encourage your child to be on time to all classes, including 1st and 2nd period. This week's POP winners are Siddharth Vekaria, Ronit Yarlagadda, Jayden Li, Fatima Alzhra Dafaalla, Augustus Parra, and Matthew Isaza. Congratulations and thank you for Raising the Ram by getting to class on time!
5. Student Services Updates
Second Semester Schedule Change Request
If your student wants to change their semester electives, please remind them to complete the Elective Change Request form. This form is posted in the Rocky Run MS Student Schoology page with instructions.
Students will be required to sit in their currently assigned courses through February 7. At that time, counselors will review the requests and make changes if possible. Please be aware that many classes are at full capacity, and we do not change core classes or PE periods to make elective changes. If we can accommodate a change request, that change is final, and students will be in that elective for the remainder of the year.
8th Grade Academic Advising
Tuesday 1/21 - Friday 1/31 - Individual Academic Advising
Rocky Run Counselors are meeting one-on-one with all 8th graders to go over courses selections and make sure all classes have been entered in SIS correctly. Please check our Academic Advising website for more detailed information. You can also find the recording of our 8th grade parent coffee on our website under "Rising 9th Grade Information". Thank you for your participation!
7th Grade Academic Advising
Monday 2/10 - Friday 2/28 - Academic Advising
Rock Run counselors will meet with each 7th grader individually to discuss courses and confirm all classes have been entered in SIS correctly.
6. Instructional Updates
Library Happenings
Cell Model Projects!
Is your student a 7th grader? If so, ask them about their cell model project! All science 7 classes visited the library’s makerspace, the Inspiration Studio, to create 3D cell models as part of their Cell Invasion project. It was amazing to watch students collaborate, negotiate, and learn together. Students then used their laptop to take a photo of the model and label it in Google Slides. It is a true blended learning project that allows students to demonstrate their knowledge in a hands-on way.
Book Returns
On Thursday, all students received an email with their current library checkouts. Please check with your student to see if they received the email and help them make a plan for any books they need to return. Can’t find a book? Be sure to contact Mrs. Grover (ragrover@fcps.edu) to arrange replacement.

Video Game Consoles & Accessories
Did your child get a new video game system for the holidays and they are ready to donate an older system? Or maybe you have systems sitting around that no one uses? Our Retro Video Game Club would love to take them off of your hands! They are looking for anything up to Xbox 360/PlayStation 3. Consoles can be broken or working - they love to tinker with broken systems to bring them back to life! They also accept games and accessories (such as controllers). If you have any items to donate, please email Shannon Campbell at SLCampbell@fcps.edu to coordinate drop-off.
