Message from the Principal

Greetings Irving Families!

What a quick week! Our students did a wonderful job of adjusting to all of the changes to the schedule this week. When we return, students will have 3 days to finish second quarter work before the end of the quarter. A reminder that we will not have school on Wednesday, January 29, so teachers can work on submitting grades.

We are excited to share the Track Season registration form link is live! More information will be shared regarding the season soon. For planning purposes, we want to make families aware of our meet dates. All track meets will be on Saturdays again, on the following dates: April 26, May 3, May 10, May 17, with the division championship being held on May 31. If you would like to have your child participate in track, please click HERE to register. Students who wish to participate in track MUST have a sports physical dated after May 1, 2024. If your child participated in cross country, they do not need to get another physical, but they do need to register for track through the form above.

Lastly, I would like to share an exciting partnership and service-learning opportunity that our 8th grade students will be participating in later this year with Rise Against Hunger. "Rise Against Hunger is growing a global movement to end hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives and responding to emergencies". Most recently, they have been providing significant support to people in the communities destroyed by fires in California. We have a lofty goal of having all 641, eighth grade students participate in packing meals for distribution on our event day, Wednesday, June 4. To meet this goal, we would like to raise $24,100, which pays for the food, supplies, and distribution. If we can reach our fundraising goal, our students would be able pack more than 60,000 meals throughout the day.

We are looking for sponsors and partners to help us meet this goal. If you would like to make a donation or know of someone who would like to partner with us to help us reach our goal, please share this link to the Irving Middle School Rise Against Hunger donation and information page. More information will be shared over the next couple of weeks as we continue to kick off our Rise Against Hunger campaign.

Take Care!

Cindy Conley

Opioid Awareness

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”
