Principals' Message

Dear Dolphin Families,

This week brought some two-hour delays due to weather, but our students showed great flexibility in adjusting to the schedule. While they’ve been making the most of indoor activities, many are eager to enjoy outdoor recess again. We encourage everyone to dress warmly and take advantage of the weekend for some fresh air and outdoor play.

A big thank-you to everyone who made our Career Day a success! After a multi-year hiatus, it was wonderful to see such strong participation. Based on the overwhelming positive feedback, we’re excited to continue this tradition with more career-focused events in the future.

We also want to emphasize the importance of consistent attendance. Currently, 15.5% of our students are missing instruction—roughly a quarter of our school community. This impacts not just individual learning but also the classroom dynamic. We truly miss our dolphins when they’re out and appreciate your efforts in prioritizing attendance so we can learn and grow together.

Upcoming Events:

  • January 26: PTA Ice Skating Event @ 3:10 PM–5:10 PM
  • January 27: Winter Music Concert @ Langston Hughes Middle School, 6:00 PM–8:00 PM
  • January 28: End of Second Quarter

Lastly, as temperatures drop, please ensure students dress warmly with coats, hats, and gloves, as we aim to go outside for recess whenever possible. If your family needs assistance with winter clothing, please contact us—we’re here to help!

Thank you for your partnership, and have a safe and rejuvenating weekend.

Warmly,

Mrs. Jill D. Stewart, Principal

Ms. Melanie N. Porter, Assistant Principal

🧥 Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Winter weather is here! As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. We monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education.

Visit Fairfax County’s website for Winter Weather/Extreme Cold safety tips

If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please contact our family liaison, Alexa O'Flynn, at aoflynn1@fcps.edu. You may also contact Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Treating Lice

Health Alert Series- Head Lice, Part 2

This week in our head lice informational series, we’re sharing important information on identifying and treating lice. Early action is essential to effectively manage lice and prevent them from spreading.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Itching and Scratching: Commonly on the back of the scalp, neck, and behind the ears.

  • Sores on the Head: Often caused by scratching.

  • Visible Lice or Nits: Nits are small white eggs that stick to the hair near the scalp.

  • Remember: Nits stick to the hair and cannot be brushed off like dandruff or dirt. Some children may not show symptoms, so regular checks are recommended.

What to Do if Someone in Your Family Has Lice

  • Examine Everyone: Check all family members for lice or nits.

  • Treat Promptly: Begin treatment for all infested individuals.

Next week, we will discuss How to treat for lice.

CAUTION:

Children under two years of age or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use an anti-pediculosis product.
Persons with chronic illness or the elderly should consult their healthcare provider.
