Message from Mr. Greata
I hope you were able to stay warm this week—what a chiller it has been!
I am thrilled to share some outstanding news: last night, our school was recognized by the FCPS School Board for receiving the VDOE Highest Achievement Award for Exemplar Performance. We are one of only two FCPS high schools to earn this prestigious award this school year. When you review the award criteria, it becomes clear that this accomplishment is only possible through the collective efforts of our students, staff, and families. It truly takes a village to ensure all our students succeed. Thank you to our families for your partnership in meeting the requirements for this incredible honor!
This award is just one of many achievements at Carter G. Woodson High School this week. Here are some additional highlights:
-
All-District Band: Over 800 students from 17 local schools auditioned, and we are proud to announce that 38 of our students were selected. Even more impressive, 11 of these students are now eligible to audition for the All-Virginia Band and Orchestra.
-
One-Act Play: Our talented theater team competed in the regional competition and earned 3rd place, advancing us to the next round on February 18th at Fairfax HS.
-
Track & Field: Congratulations to Hadley Vanek for setting a new school record in the 1,000m with an impressive time of 2:54.32. Well done!
As always, check out our student recognition page for these students, and others!
Thank you for supporting our athletic and arts programs! Here are some upcoming events we hope you can attend:
- Tonight is Turnpike night for our girls and boys varsity basketball teams. We will be playing against Robinson with boys at 5:45 p.m. and girls tip off at 7:30 p.m.
- Dessert on Broadway is tonight at 7:00 p.m. with two shows on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Come early for some dessert. Tickets can be purchased here.
- Our Unified Special Olympics basketball team will be competing this Saturday at Marshall High School. We'll be playing West Potomac at 3:00 p.m. and Robinson at 5:00 p.m., please enter through door number five.
Looking ahead, I would like to invite you to a Virtual Community Meeting on February 13th at 6:30 p.m., where we will discuss our ongoing efforts to address hate speech. These efforts are essential to fostering a culture of inclusivity, and your participation is vital. Please save the date, and check next week’s update for the meeting link.
Please note that Tuesday, January 28th is the last day of the second quarter and is a full school day. There is no school for students on Wednesday, January 29th - Teacher Work Day.
Thank you for your continued support of our students and school community. I look forward to seeing you at these events and our virtual meeting.
Warm regards,
Kevin Greata Principal

Academic Advising
Woodson Counselors are in high gear as they prepare for Academic Advising. Last week they visited Frost Middle School to meet with our rising 9th graders. They introduced them to potential course options, reviewed graduation requirements, and shared important information as they get ready to transition to high school next fall. Speaking of Advising, here is the schedule!
Rising Seniors: February 5- February 18
Rising Juniors: February 19- February 26
Rising Sophomores: February 27-March 7
Rising seniors will meet with their counselors during a History class at some point within the timeframe noted above. Rising juniors and sophomores will meet with their counselors during a PE class at some point within the timeframe noted above. If a student is not taking a History or PE class at Woodson this year, their counselor will contact them separately to schedule an academic advising appointment.

Counselor Corner
Have you discussed your child’s class intentions for next school year? This weekend is a great time to do that. Refer to the Academic Advising padlet for the course catalog, course selection sheets, and all important resources you need to make the best decisions. Please also review the Woodson Academic Advising website for comprehensive information and resources regarding all things academic advising.
Counselors are looking forward to meeting with each student at their individual meeting! However, please know that we will be away from email more frequently during this time. We appreciate your patience during this busy (and exciting) time of year.
Reminder that Quarter 2 ends on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Please visit our Academic Support padlet for test taking tips, study tips, and time management resources.
Attention Seniors! Counselors will send midyear reports & transcripts the week of Feb. 10. There is no need to do anything. We automatically send based on your initial request. The transcripts will include updated 1st semester grades and cumulative GPAs.
Want an instant boost to your well-being? Researchers at the Big Joy Project have discovered that completing micro-acts of joy by helping others can boost your wellness by 25%. So go on, give that compliment, words of encouragement, or small acts of kindness. It’s good for both of you! Take care.
