Thank you to our PTA for organizing this opportunity to meet our School Board Member.

Early Release Forms Due 1/29

early

On February 10, 2025, NFES students will be dismissed 3 hours early at 12:35pm.

This week, students brought home a form to indicate their dismissal plan for February 10th. If you haven't already done so, please complete and return this form to the school by January 29th!

valentines

Valentines by Kids

Not all superheroes wear capes. NFES students were challenged to be a superhero in someone’s life by using their power of empathy to help those in our community. We partnered with “Valentines by Kids,” a program that was formed by a 14-year-old boy who had the vision of creating Valentine's Day cards for people in nursing homes and hospitals. This work has expanded with the help of our Newington Forest students (Grades 1st – 6th) who are creating Valentine's Day cards, including messages of encouragement for those who need it most, the sick and the elderly.

One of the greatest acts of empathy is to show unconditional kindness toward someone who may never have the ability to give back in return, but that is what superheroes do.  https://valentinesbykids.org/photo-gallery/

Be Kind to our Loving Forest Court Neighnors

We have received communication from our community that NFES families are parking along Loving Forest Court and then walking over to pick up/drop off their kids. This makes it difficult for residents to navigate in and around the circle.

We ask families to please utilize the Kiss & Ride line for arrival and dismissal. This is the most safe process for our children to be dropped off and picked up by families, and the car line moves pretty quickly.

3rd Grade Recorder Survey

recorder

NFES 3rd Graders are starting their unit on recorders!

Every student is responsible for their own instrument. Please take a minute to answer this survey.

Recorders are available for purchase through the school for $5. Payment can be made through cash, personal check to "Newington Forest ES," or through MySchoolBucks.

Students will need to bring their recorders to class by Monday, February 3rd.

Mark your calendars! Our Recorder Concert will be Thursday, March 13th, at 7:00pm.

📈 Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. They will be distributed by schools this month to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our schools and staff are committed to working with families to support every student to succeed at their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Get more information on opioid awareness.

FCPS Cares is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can all acknowledge the good work of our Newington Forest staff members.
