Roadrunner Rundown
January 21, 2025
Principal's Message
Dear Marshall Road Families,
We hope you enjoyed the long weekend and were warm and safe. Students will not be going outside during these days of extreme cold. You can find more information below about safety during these cold winter days.
Keeping our students and staff safe at arrival and dismissal is of utmost import. Parents who drive their children to or from school must use the Kiss & Ride Lane unless you need to park and come into the building for a meeting. Dropping off or picking up students along Marshall Road and in Delilah Drive is not allowed. Only students walking to school should use the Marshall Road crosswalk. Kiss & Ride has been backed up recently because of the extra traffic on Marshall Road. When leaving the Kiss & Ride line, please only turn right on Marshall Road during arrival and dismissal. All families must abide by these guidelines for the safety of all. If you are using the Kiss & Ride lane, please join the line early enough to allow your child time to get to their class by 9:20 am. Students who arrive to class after 9:00 am will be marked tardy.
As we mentioned last week, we have four student teachers from Seoul National University at our school through the end of this week. These aspiring educators have jumped right in to observe and assist teachers in classrooms while they gain valuable insights into the teaching methods and the vibrant learning environment that MRES provides. We are learning from them as they learn from us and are grateful for the ways they are enriching our school community by providing different perspectives and fostering international educational exchange.
We are so grateful for the wonderful community members who care for our students and school. Over the weekend, some “magic shoveling elves” (former parents) shoveled a new path that was obstructed by the plowing. Acts of kindness like this one are what make MRES such a wonderful place.
Have a great week!

Attendance Matters
Missed Days Add Up Quickly!
- Just a few missed days a month adds up to several school weeks missed in a year.
- Both excused and unexcused absences can make it more difficult for your child to keep up with other students, especially in math and reading.
- Kindergarten and first grade are critical for your child. Missing school during these early years makes it more difficult for children to learn in later years and they often have trouble reading by the end of third grade.

🧥 Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities
Winter weather is here! As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors when the weather allows. Schools monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education.
View Fairfax County’s Winter Weather/Extreme Cold safety tips.
If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please contact our school counselors, Meg Gillespie (mmgillespie@fcps.edu) and Ada Ezikpe (aoezikpe@fcps.edu) or our social worker, Marcie Cohen (mlcohen@fcps.edu). You may also contact Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.
Lost and Found
Please have your child check the Lost & Found for winter coats, sweatshirts, hats, and water bottles. We will once again be donating unclaimed items at the end of the month. To prevent lost items, we ask that you label them with your child’s last name so found items can be returned directly to the student.
FCPS Cares Program
The FCPS CARES Program allows parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees who go above and beyond to help others and show they care about their students, colleagues, and the community. We invite you to submit a story to acknowledge the great work of an FCPS employee or group of employees who should receive FCPS CARES recognition. Please email submissions to Jennifer Heflin at Jfheflin@fcps.edu.

Canned Food Drive Competition
The Marshall Road weekend food program, F4T, is resuming and we need items to sustain our support for families throughout the school year. Each week, Marshall Road volunteers will pack nearly 70 weekend food packs to help support children experiencing food insecurity with healthy food for the weekend. Help students in our community with a donation, canned chicken and soup cans. The grade with more cans donated will win a surprise. Donations can be placed in the F4T bin in the lobby by students from January 21- 31. Items can also be donated via our Amazon Wish List or Walmart Wish List.
MRES International Night
Our International Night will be held Friday, January 31, 5:30-7:30 pm. You still have time to showcase your culture and heritage by hosting a country table. Take this opportunity to talk about traditions, history, cultural contributions and how your heritage is part of how special you are. Learn more on our International Night webpage and host a country table here.
MRES Staff Spotlight
